Baba O'Reilly?

Hey all,

I think this is my first time post in the VH room. Looking for someone in the Van Halen know can point me in the right direction? A friend of mine is looking for a 'cover' of Baba O'Reilly. I'm not sure if this is a Van Halen tune, or a cover someone else did (I see that Mr. Big does a cover), but apparently a cover/song they did around '96 with Sammy. Anyone have a link to the song by chance?

cheers

- B

Hi Brandon.

to my knowledge - (and of Van Halen, I'll usually win the trivia contests....) Van Halen never covered "Baba O'Reilly" - They covered "We Won't Get Fooled Again", in 1992....and Edward Van Halen did the keyboard bits from the song on his Wolfgang Guitar.... It can be found on disc 2 of "Live: Right here right now" and a live video from 5150 studio can be found here..

Sammy hagar, however, covered "Baba O' Reilly" prior to his tenure in Van Halen - with his solo band. Here....

Hope that helps.

Ok - I took your note back to my friend (well, my bro actually). Here's his feedback:

nope... I think it was in hartford CT. And yes it is a Who cover. They were known to do 'Won't get fooled again'. And they also did Baba O'Reily. I used to have it and I think it was from a live simalcast.

Hope this helps...
thanks for looking
BTW.... I asked Eddie when I met him at 5150 and he said he remembered doing it but did know who had a copy of it..."

Definitely appreciate anyone who might know or have a live recording collection. Thought is from a show during the last of the original Sammy era. I know we're probably digging deep here, so thanks in advance for reading

cheers

Well - how about this. While I'm not going to outright TELL You who they are, because I don't like to give away my sources, realize I've been in radio for going on 15 years...and I know several of the techs that worked on that tour. That was the Balance tour....and I saw them on the two opening nights of that tour and followed them throughout....I asked one of those people with a written record of everything that happened before posting my original response, and got back a "not in my list"

In fact, this particular person has a list of every date, and every song that was played on that tour, because he had to tune different things for different songs.

The Seventh Seal * Runaround * Top of the World * Amsterdam * When It's Love * You Really Got Me * Mike's Solo * Aftershock * Alex's Solo * Can't Stop Lovin' You * Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love * Feelin' * Eagles Fly * Ed's Solo * Why Can't This Be Love * Finish What Ya Started * Right Now * Panama * Dreams.

Those were the songs that were played on the balance tour, with one exception, that being "Mississippi Queen" on 8/25/95 - in New York, which would have been ONE NIGHT before the night in question, which if you'll note is 8/26/95, Hartford CT, and he believes "Runnin With The Devil" might have been medley'd into one or two nights...somewhere.

I will never tell you that you're absolutely dead wrong....just because someday I might claim that and the off chance would happen that you were right, but call this one 99.99% sure, on very reliable sources....that one didn't happen. Like I said, quiz me on any music subject and I'll do pretty damn good...this is what I "do'' - I'm a music historian and a radio host...but Van Halen, is something I know inside and out...

You asked for an answer, you got it, your brother apparently doesn't want the answer, or as it would seem, knew it before he asked (why?). I've reason to say, if he'd met Ed at any point on the LAST THREE TOURS (Balance, III, or 2004) - and asked him "hey, do you remember the night pigs flew out of your ass on stage" - he'd would've been so far beyond fucked up he would probably say "yup....still got pawprints on my cheeks" (Pain Killers on Balance, God Knows WHAT On 2004, and 1998 he probably mentally blocks out because it was Cherone..). Sad as it is, Edward Van Halen is probably not a good source of information on Van Halen...

So on that note, I politely offer back to you what I said first - "It didn't happen" - and await someone to prove otherwise, to me, undeniably.

Peace Out!

From my bro:

"Wow really well said and good laugh too.

While I won't say 100% either, is it possible that it was part of a medley, which they were known to do?With out a doubt Eddie played the Baba intro on guitar. Thats what caught my attention in the first place. I remember some sort of music awards show they played this at. I just asked my ex-wife and she remembers me recording this show on dat. I've lost a lot of dats over the years as a result of moving. But I'll keep searching for the performance. It's got to turn up.
Thanks for your consideration and time....
Brent'

Thanks again, man you rock.

It wasn't baba o reilly - it was "We Won't get fooled again.".

Is he just too hardheaded to LISTEN? I just gave it to you, right out of the mouth of a man who was THERE..it DID NOT HAPPEN. It never happened. I have not one, but TWO men who stood backstage for more than one tour with that band saying "Did Not Happen" - Why don't you tell your brother to either "put up or shut up" - instead of playing "happy mediator". I'd like to see whatever proof he's got...and I'd like to see it now....so that I can move on with this stupid thread....now you've got not just ME (with the back up of TWO VAN HALEN TECHS), but another user telling you "it didn't happen" and you're still believing your brother?

Sure. Try your luck at the links. Or even better, try your luck at http://www.van-halen.net - In fact - I'd encourage BOTH....particularly the latter.

Go to Van-Halen.net - register for an account, find BEN5150....and ask HIM...if it ever happened....HE worked Van Halen's SOUNDBOARDS for their tours.......and tell him specifically, that "I" sent you... (Tell them "Steve from Venom Nation" sent you...)

I have yet to understand your methods..

1) Show up on a message board
2) Ask a question
3) Get a very well written, extremely polite answer from someone who KNOWS the answer
4) Dispute answer as if you already knew it before you asked, say "my brother says you're wrong"
5) Get another well written answer from same individual.A
6) Dispute it AGAIN..."my brother says you're wrong".

Why the hell did you ASK, if you weren't willing to accept the answer from not one, but now TWO people?

VH never did Baba O'Reilly, unless you want to count Sammy saying "They're all wasted" in the middle of "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Won't Get Fooled Again is on the live album, and you can find a video of them doing it live in the studio, too.

But no Baba.

They did a version of Won't get folled again from the studio as a promo for Live : RHRN, but I do not recall ever seeing a cover of Baba O'Reilley anywhere.

I have one more exception for you. In Raleigh, NC, the stopped in the middle of YRGM, the last song, and ended the night with Neal Young's "Rockin in the Free World".

That 100%, positively happened. I was there, and was hoping for Won't Get Fooled Again, or Cabo Wabo, like on the album, and was disappointed to get that song.

As far as Baba O'Reilly, I still agree, that never happened, other than Sammy saying the "They're all wasted" near the middle of Won't Get Fooled Again. That's probably the mistake the OP's brother is making.
