Great non-sappy ballads

Postby Ehwmatt » Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:10 am

Let's hear some good, moody ballads that don't involve faded wedding photographs or open arms (i.e. super cliche sap lyrics!). Don't necessarily have to be love songs/lost love songs... can be songs that are just "sad" or "resigned" in nature I guess. I'll start:

Todd Rundgren - Parallel Lines - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O8S5pdXUpQ&feature=fvw

Marillion - Sugar Mice - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIPrJmzG7Ss

Moody Blues - December Snow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6dJO1JWdSI&feature=fvw

Steve Lukather - The Letting Go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRNgfK5bf8U

The lyrics are sappy, but the song rocks. And yes, this is a ballad.

I love that song. I never even considered it a ballad, but I think you're right.

I love that song. I never even considered it a ballad, but I think you're right.

Most often, people think that slow songs are ballads. Not always true.
Most often, people think that a ballad has to be slow. Not always true.
The real definition of a ballad is - a song that tells a melancholy story, a romantic or poetic song.
Tempo doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Yeah, I bet some will think these are sappy but to me they never were. Listening to some of these for the first time in almost 20 years really freaks me out. Feels like when I turn off my computer and go outside, I'll be back in Japan again, like the last time I was when I listened to most of these.

Toto - I won't hold you back now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F58qX9pofXY

Kiss - Beth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uABnCLr4Pp0

Eagles - I can't tell you why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WwhRV1XP6A

Nazareth - Love Hurts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2BjJbKQkgc

Moody Blues - Knights in White Satin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9muzyOd4Lh8

Boz Scaggs - We're All Alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBDjpqgk3t4

Starship - No Way Out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1dUMDsBhrM

Paul McCartney - My Love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN4ZDjFGUB0

Paul McCartney - Baby I'm Amazed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg35yrBTqqI

Eric Carmen - All by Myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaCU4w2HTco

Harry Nilsson - Without You: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERhvqJzmZAY

Ozzy & Lita - Close My Eyes Forever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loyTCkV06xQ

And everything Air Supply which is way too much to list in this thread.
