In nightbull's "if you were in a band thread," the following was stated:

Steve Smith was the drummer for most of Journey's biggest hits - again, nothing outstanding in the drumming dept.

WHAT?!

Haha, I just can't believe someone would say that! That's like saying Steve Lukather is not a special guitarist after hearing his work on Africa or even Hold The Line

In fairness, I can see how one would overlook Smith's abilities. I mean, when he was backing one of the most prolific voices EVER and one of the BEST guitarists, if not the best, to grace the entire AOR genre, it's easy to see how a "lowly" drummer could be overlooked.

I didn't realize how good Smitty was til I heard The Party's Over for the first time... behind that funky riff Neal played was some of the coolest drums I'd heard to that point.

Anyone who doesn't respect Steve Smith as a drummer knows little about drumming.

But lets not start a feud with the Styx people over it....
we have enough fights between Journey fans to keep everyone busy....who has time for side skermishes?

Smitty was definitely the underrated member of the band.

Damn right!!!
Whoever wrote that has no idea how incredible Smitty is as a drummer. (plus he is a nice guy) I met him before..

He is the only drummer to ever be voted as best rock and jazz drummer simultaneously.

Anal is just having an over excessive obsession with making sure everything is in the right place.

Vaginal is all that, but doing doing so with a bit of complaining and irrationality.

If we're going to discuss this here instead in it's proper place (sorry, I'd prefer that the Golden Gate Drivel Section is kept *out* of the OT board)...

...I'm not so sure why this is a big deal. Consider the source....Styx fans? Styx's two drummers, John and Todd, weren't/aren't fit to wipe the sweat off of Smith's balls. Hell, I'd suggest that either of them aren't fit to wipe the sweat off of Dunbar's balls or Castro's balls either....but to keep this on point....Smith is a better drummer than 99% of the rock drummers out there....and he's not even a fucking rock drummer.

I'd expect a fucking vag flap from a dream theater or whitesnake forum, where Mike Portnoy or Tommy Aldridge are fucking monster drummers in their own right....and if those fans would want to bitch about Smitty, they'd at least be doing so from a poorly defensible platform....but a platform none-the-less.

For someone to stand behind someone like a John Panozzo and ooze some vaginal secretions about Steve Smith, there's gotta be a screw lose in that person.

I'd give such idiocy zero attention. It's not worth it. It's like a short-bus kid challenging you to a game of red light. You're gonna win whether you accept the challenge or sit down and start making retard-noises and watch him chime in. So why bother?

John was nothin great, but Todd's a very special drummer Frank.

I'll agree that he's a good drummer...but special? eh. Not impressed.

I'll stand by my original statement. he's not fit to wipe the sweat off of Steve Smith's balls....

And again...this is coming from a styx fan? Comparing era to era, when Steve Smith was revolutionizing rock drumming in Journey......John Panozo was throwing fried chicken at robotos yelling "you got no rhythm" Ironic since he should talk!

regardless, its a big difference....and not anything that anyone in a former Journey forum should get their panties in a bunch about. (yes, andrew move this shit to Journey, PLEASE....keep this forum OT!)

Like I said, it's like getting challenged to a fight by a retard....not worth the effort.

Having had conversations with Steve Smith, I can speak confidently in saying that the words "fuck" or "loser" is likely not in Steve Smith's vocabulary.....but funny try, none-the-less!

Ah, as opposed to testicular, which involves making a big fuss, resolving nothing and leaving a big mess for someone else to deal with, right?
