For me it is Def Leppard. When Steve was still alive, Armageddon It was incredible. 1980's. Then, I would say Boston over the decades. So who did I miss?

If you include Harem Scarem you must add Emerald Rain - because Dmitrovic plays rings around Lesperance. Just saying... :)

And nice mention for Ken Hammer. Pretty Maids is one of the most underrated bands around. Atkins' soft/gravel voice is a nice departure from the straight-ahead melodic style, and Ken's guitar work is killer. Again, nice add

Wouldn't "guitar band" pretty much cover Hard Rock/Melodic Rock bands in general?

I don't think so. Styx, Journey, and Foreigner aren't what I call guitar bands. The keyboard plays a major role in a lot of their songs.

Who did you miss? You only named two bands. What does great guitar bands mean anyway? How about the Shadows? They were/are a great guitar band.

I love the Shadows. I don't know if they are a guitar band though, more of an instrumental band. The YardBirds would be closer to them than Def Leppard or Judas Priest, I would think.
What definition are we going with here in this thread?

I can't believe it took that many responses until
someone threw out AC/DC. There aren't too many
bands out there where, with a single guitar chord/note, you
know EXACTLY who it is. AC/DC is one. ZZ Top is up there too,
as well as several others previously mentioned.

I'd have to say though, JMO, that AC/DC is THE truest guitar band
ever and it's cool that they are still doing it the same way after all these years.

Dude, they were the FIRST band I thought of. I threw Priest in there as a sentimental fave.
