December 21, 2012 - Is It All a Hoax?

I've been hearing some chatter about this, and someone sent me a link to a website that had this article on it:
What is 2012 about?
The date December 21, 2012 is referring to the last year of the Long Count Maya calendar.
The current Great Cycle, as the Mayas call it, is set to end on the winter solstice of 2012: December 21 2012.
Many people believe that on that date, the world will change and never be the same. Some people predict terrible events resulting in the destruction of our world and some predict that it won’t necessarily end, but we will enter a new era and massive changes will occur.
2012 And The End Of The World
Whatever you are planning for your future, whether it's a new house, starting a family or even going on a diet - don't bother. In four years the world will end and your plans will be ruined. This is the belief of thousands of people across the planet, preparing for the end of the world and death of mankind. So grab your diary and put this date in it - December 21st 2012.
The concept is gaining momentum as many religious texts, historical documents and even NASA have 'predicted' that there will be major changes to the Earth in the year 2012. And with the help of celebrity believers including the always-reliable Mel Gibson joining in, 2012 has become the talking point at dinner parties everywhere.
Do you believe in this stuff?

If so he should name the CD "Lonely Planet" and have 3 or 4 copies on hand just incase a few people live.

I don't believe it's the end of the world. However I think the Mayan calendar has been correct about many events when it comes to astrology.
I personally believe that Dec 21st 2012 , there will be a major change in this world.
I don't think it will have anything to do with aliens or terrorist or WW III.
I think much like the Mayans predicting, we won't be able to meassure time the same way anymore , whether it's some asteroid getting earth out of it's course , or some changes in the climate/atmosphere/surrounding planets, there will be something major that will throw off our 365/24/60 system (and that itself can affect many things , most importantly the time every single one of us spends here at MR

)

I just go by the bible.
"In John's apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, he refers to the "unveiling" or "revelation" of Jesus Christ as Messiah. This term has come to mean, in common usage, the end of the world. But it is more accurate to interpret the term "end of the world", (as seen in the King James Version of the Bible) as "end of the age". The word translated as "world" is actually the Greek word "eon" or "age""
Not pushing this, but it's what I believe and go by.

The Bible also says that (& I'm paraphrasing here) no one will know what day or time of the apocalypse, that it will come like a thief in the night. As a Christian, that is why I never fall for these types of predictions ... b/c they discredit what is written in the Bible.
(ps... I wish Andrew had a religion forum, but it ain't never gonna happen.)

Word has it that Jesus' people and Perry's people have been in discussions to release the new Perry CD on the day before the second coming of Christ, which will happen before 2012. Perry Loons will rule the world for a full year before Jesus' return, and then the world will end. The heavens will be filled with songs of Perry and Journey with the Loons singing backup for eternity.

I like the Nac Mac Feegle view of it in Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld' books - we're already dead and this is heaven. It's pretty fantastic place when you think about it: beautiful, ever changing, filled with more variety than we could ever hope to take in, and with majesty on scales we can only glimpse; pity we have to keep fucking it up.

Why should we believe the world is going to end just because some stupid Mayan calendar says so? Just like the the prediction of chaos at the turn of the millennium...I remember my parents stocking up on water, flashlights, canned food, just all kinds of "survivor gear" for that and all it did was mess up the time clock on the computer. I think the 2012 stuff is ridiculous as well...tired of hearing about it too from family members who believe this "prophecy." And of course movie studios have to cash in on it and add fuel to the paranoia with those big 'ol billboards "YOU WERE WARNED: SEARCH 2012" for the movie coming out in November.
If the world were to end, I sure don't want to be planning for it 2yrs in advance...I don't know about anyone else, but I deal with enough everyday crap as it is, don't need the extra psychological warfare thinking about the looming end of days. Just like every other major change, it will happen when you least expect it anyway

I dont think youre paying attention
Nowhere have the Mayans predicted the end of the world at Dec 21 2012. Their calendar simply stops right at this day with the explanation that it will not be
possible to meassure time from that date on. The Mayan calendar that you refer to as stupid has been accurate 100% when it comes to planet movements, volcano erruptions, solar and lunar eclipses and major disasters caused by weather.
the Y2K was never predicted by any ancient calendars.... it was rather a minor "problem" that couldve caused some problems due to the fact that COMPUTERS were all going by 2 digit years in the system, but most companies adjusted that long before 12/31/1999..... That had nothing to do with END OF THE WORLD, but rather anything computer and digitally time based would be affected and possibly malfunction,,,, but far from end of the world.....

Jim Morrison said,
"I just want to get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames"
I'll go with that, pass me a six pack Miller Genuine Draft and crank up Escape. fuck worrying about whether the Mayans are right or wrong.

Simply a movement into the Age of Aquarius. Interesting now that we are in Pisces (sign of the fish -- gee.... what ELSE has a fish for a sign... ooooooh I know). The cycle is complete, and another starts. The world didn't end when Taurus ended and Pisces started, so I doubt it will with Aquarius.
"The Age of Aquarius is one of the twelve astrological ages. Each astrological age is approximately 2,150 years long, on average, but there are various methods of calculating this length that may yield longer or shorter time spans depending upon the technique used. Unlike sun-sign astrology where the first sign is Aries, followed by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces whereupon the cycle returns to Aries and through the zodiacal signs again, the astrological ages proceed in the opposite direction or order. Therefore the age before the Age of Aquarius is the Age of Pisces - the current age or eon. Following the Age of Aquarius will be the Age of Capricorn, then the Age of Sagittarius and so on".
So all the Mayan's did was count out the age -- big whoop.
