Those of us in my dept. who were being either laid off or transferred with less pay to other departments gave an interview a couple of weeks ago. For some reason the guy took my pix and not the others. But, when the article came out we were surprised to find that it made us sound way different than what we had discussed. We sound whiny and ungrateful.

I am being transferred to another dept., something in Human Services, and as I have always said "at least I am working." Too bad the article did not reflect that we are grateful to have jobs and that some of us are taking up to $1,000 a month in pay cuts with the new jobs being given us. I'm not a big fan of the press. But, hey live and learn.

Hey, I hope you all had a nice holiday and I hope you have an even better week. Thanks to some who asked, there will be more MBPL Paris videos, about 2 more, then my embarrassing "drunken" video and then I will take a short break from everything to sort of regroup. Enjoy! MBPL

Thank you, dear. I will be working, hopfully at the same wage, but in a different dept. But, my co-worker has to take a $1,000 a month pay cut and that sucks! Plus, I will be "bumping" someone from their job and they may not have a job to go to due to lack of seniority. That is what's so unfair, really. MBPL

I feel your pain Lorrie, it was confirmed last week that there will be lay-offs coming at our company before the end of the year too. No dates or numbers, everybody is pretty stressed.

One of these days the media's gonna get theirs. So don'tcha worry your pretty lil head about that.
And you know you'll be alright anyway... I don't know you on a deep spiritual level but I don't quite think you're in for any bad karma. And if things ever turn really bad... you can always pack up shop and run off with a band of gypsies. That's what I'd do anyway...

Sadly, the press has changed the way it does it's job over the past 20-30 years.

They write the story first and try to fit the interviews into their story. The way it's supposed to be, is that the story comes from the interviews.

Absolutely. You can believe just about nothing the media feeds. And at this point, it isn't stictly because of the way a given media outlet is spinning a story. More and more you see the media citing other media outlets as their source, so in essence, they aren't even doing the work. They're taking what other sources, including gossip sites like TMZ, are reporting and prefacing their reports with "According to a report by (insert source here)..."

I call bullshit. Check the facts, get things straight based on what information is available and present your story. I'm tired of anonymous sources and third party reports because that is all you ever see anymore. It really puts a huge dent in credibility.

Yes, the media can be total douchebags. There are some cool people out there, but like someone said, most already have a story in their mind and are going to "adjust" the quotes to fit that. I posted a while back the actual responses I had to a guy from the Washington Post and someone had posted the interview here, and it was clear that there was no similarity to the conversation I had with the guy versus what he printed from me.

Credibility is now a dead dinosaur. Unfortunately they know exactly what they are doing, and are spinning the truth in order to enable the people signing their paychecks, and the people signing theirs.

I can relate a bit. All kinds of accusations and assumptions have been made of me and many names called on here by a few and they've NEVER been accurate!

You SHOULD be proud to associate with someone who's got more than half a brain and can sniff out SHITE and think for herself. Time and time again I'm smacked with the reality of "don't believe something just because someone says it." This is a perfect example. They can't even give the correct weather and traffic most of the time!

I stopped believing media outlets one cold morning about 9 or 10 years ago when Tom "It's not going to rain" Skilling on WGN said there was no rain in the forcast that day, and right out my window, AS he said it on the TV, it was frickin' raining. Although, here in 2009, that report would go something more like "According to TMZ.com, it is not going to rain today."

When I first went to Japan to live there, I had this class that I had to go through, it was manditory in order to go to Japan as a foreigner. The class was based on what a westerner would experience when it came to cultural shock there, the things to do, the things not to do, what is considered rude, etc. and was taught by the American government. As a foreigner, I was an American Diplomat where everyone will be watching me, so I had to represent America in the best way. One of the things they taught in this class was not to talk to any media. Because in Japan they will take a foriegner and ask him some qestions and then they will take away the voice and dub in a "Japanese translator" saying whatever they want the public to hear and not what the actual answer is. Back in the mid-80's that was something that was widely practiced in Japan, interviewing young American guys. Depending on the agenda of who was asking the questions, it could be about American military presents in Japan to how we like the Japanese women or view their culture. They would then turn it around to fit their agenda. If the media didn't favor American presents in Japan, they would "fill in" the voice with a Japanese translator saying bad things about Japan. I knew a few American's who got burned this way and had to leave the country. So to keep things level, talking to the media was strictly off limits.

So that's when I learned not to say a word to the media about anything even in the U.S. Now with your experience now, you have learned the hard way not to do interviews with them.

I read the article, and I don't think you and your fellow workers came across as whiny or ungrateful. It's pretty obvious the reporter was putting the worst possible spin on things, trying to make both the union and the mayor look like the bad guys and the whole situation as unbearably bleak. You came across to me as people trapped in a horrible situation with no real support from anywhere.

I'm glad you're still in work, dearheart; I wish it was under better circumstances.
