Is The Best Music by Artists Created When High?

Postby Jana » Sat Oct 17, 2009 6:05 am

When I think of unbelievable albums and songs they usually are never after the band has straightened itself out soberwise b/c of addiction, but in their early years when they were in a drug-filled haze or at least partially, from reading later interviews by them, or is it just that the energy of their youth and originality helps to create great albums in the beginning and then just gets harder to replicate that success and be original? Plus, they are rich and lazy, not enough hunger to achieve more creatively, or drive?

Article on Cocaine and David Bowie:

And then there’s David Bowie, a rock star whose coke intake was considered dangerously heroic even by the standards of Los Angeles rock stars in the mid-seventies. Consider the following evidence:

And believe it or not, Bowie’s coke habit would only get worse from there; he’d spend much of the next two years having his semen stolen by witches, subsisting on a diet consisting mostly of peppers and milk – oh, and recording Station to Station, quite possibly the best album he’d ever record. Ironically, despite the title track’s pleas that “It’s not the side effects of the cocaine,” Station to Station is also one of the few albums where the album is clearly richer for coke’s motivational efforts; it might only be six songs long, but each one sounds polished, refined, and perfected to within seven decimal places. Unfortunately, Bowie paid for his inspiration with his memory; he now claims to remember absolutely nothing about the recording sessions for Station. If only he’d written down his doses; it sure sounds like he got he got them right.

PSYCHEDELICS
Todd Rundgren, A Wizard, A True Star
The upside of psychedelics for artists is the idea of exploring the inner workings of your mind and the universe and other impenetrable hippie nonsense; the downside, of course, is that psychedelics literally exist to render the people who take them utterly incoherent. As a result, even a lot of the best music made under the influence of psychedelics tends to be rather tiring as you struggle to keep up with these deranged lunatics; Sly & the Family Stone’s PCP-fueled There’s a Riot Goin’ On, for instance, is unquestionably one of the greatest records in the history of music, but it’s certainly not something you casually throw on every now and again. Then there’s all the psychedelic-derived stuff which is most emphatically not the best, a category which includes Dave Matthews Band and Phish and I’m just going to stop typing now.

A Wizard, A True Star, however, is the antithesis of tiring; it is 55:56 (a length which bumped up against the maximum amount of music a record could hold) of musical stream-of-consciousness, rocketing back and forth between genres ranging from heavy metal to doo-wop to children’s music. The entire first side of the record is one contiguous slab of psychedelic studio tricks and resolute genre nonconformity; it sounds like the same kind of sonic patchwork quilt as the Avalanches’ Since I Left You. As for whether Rundgren was on anything or not, well:

No.

Two words. "Octopus's Garden".

Confirmed by Ringo to have been written under severe influence.
Confirmed by me to be a complete crap tune.

Yes:

Aerosmith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yGCHPmfqT0

Pink Floyd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkJNyQfAprY

Plus, Neal and Gregg were raised on Santana and Carlos was a definite stoner. So basically Journey was birthed out of a stoner band.

Carlos Santana wrote:"Legalize marijuana and take all that money and invest it in teachers and in education," Santana said in an interview this week. "You will see a transformation in America."

That's what they said about the lottery in Florida when pushing it, how our education system was going to benefit from the money. Wrong. We are in a mess down here, closing schools, budget cuts, you name it.

LMAO! So true, that is like one of the very very few Beatles song I would skip over. For The Benifit Of Mr. Kite is the other one.

All I know is that Pink Floyd's music must have some type of pharmacutical explanation. Can anyone remember which Pink Floyd song has Gomer Pyle featured in it? I'm thinking Comfortably Numb, but I could be wrong. I must have listened to Pink Floyd's music a million times but the one time I listened to it high---there it was---plain as day ---- Gomer Pyle saying, "Surprise!, surprise!, surprise!" My buddies & I were playing cards & doing shots. We all heard it at the very same time, looked up at each other for confirmation & totally burst out laughing b/c Gomer Pyle is SO outta place in any Pink Floyd song.

If I find it, I'll YouTube you guys the link so you can hear it for yourself.

Yes one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd - The Wall. The song is "Nobody Home" Pyle's voice is featured near the very end of the song and right after the line: "when I pickup the phone..."then you hear Pyle's voice.

I'd love to take your paycheck, and I would if I bet you I'm not a fraud or Susie. But there is no way to collect, you wouldn't send it over anyways. So why in hell do you think I'm not who I say I am? Because I don't post my pix? Because I don't meet up with anyone at any of the Journey concerts? Why, because I'm really curious to know why you think so.

I thought Sushi was a friend of Arnel's back in Hong Kong days and played in a band there, but a white guy. Wasn't there a video posted with him in it back in those days when Arnel was young and on stage in the video also?

If your that positive, I tell you what, you going to attend any Journey concerts in California in the near future? I'll happily show up if you want to bet a couple thousand cash. Give me the concert date and I'll be there. Plus before any of this takes place, you have to agree how much money to bet. I'm willing to bet you any amount, but reasonably what are you able to afford? Just make sure you bring the money to the concert with you because I don't take surprises too well.

Yes one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd - The Wall. The song is "Nobody Home" Pyle's voice is featured near the very end of the song and right after the line: "when I pick up the phone..."then you hear Pyle's voice.

Thanks, Sushi. You're alright for a lesbian.

Gomer Pyle is at the 2:52 mark.

Yeah, my wife thinks so too.

Your wife thinks so too? That's what gives you away. You didn't need to validate that you have a wife, but you always do. And it's a Japanese wife, right? You're such a nice muticultural person. Fraud. Stop the fucking charades Susie. Do me a favor, sign up as Susie and post as a regular person. I'll welcome, hug and kiss you. Even in person.

You'd love to, but you'd lose.

I thought Sushi was a friend of Arnel's back in Hong Kong days and played in a band there, but a white guy. Wasn't there a video posted with him in it back in those days when Arnel was young and on stage in the video also?

There certainly had to be huh?

Yes and no. No....I knew AP before HK days and Yes....there is video of me with AP shot over 20 years ago. It was on youtube for a short period of time but was removed. Do some research of previous AMO band members and you will see me in some of the pictures with them also.
I've never eaten a piece of sushi I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

How about we show up even squared? I fly free. I'll go anywhere you want to go. Show up. That's all you have to do. I'm more than game.

I'm sure they will play again sometime in the state of CA. If Rick is anything like Rip, he'll be at the concert. Rip goes to Journey concerts as much as I go to Japan. Now that's dedication that I can relate to!

Actually, the Floyd guys other than Syd Barrett have vehemently denied using drugs back in their creative heyday. I don't think they were as tripped out as you think. I remember reading a quote somewhere along the lines that "The psychedelic movement took place around us, but not within us" or something like that.

Same thing with Todd Rundgren who got a shoutout earlier in this thread, he was never on drugs, he's actually pretty straight laced. He likes to booze like a regular guy but he was never into hard drugs.

Not all the time.

Megadeth just came out with 'Endgame', which is probably their best album since Rust in Peace, and Dave Mustaine was 100% clean during its making. Their '88 album, 'So Far So Good... So What?", however, was written when Dave was heavily addicted to heroin and cocaine and god knows what else, and it wasn't too great beyond a couple of songs.

Then again, I think Metallica's success is what motivates Dave in the long run.

Hmmm, interesting. I've always considered the lottery to be an idiot tax. Your quandry leads to some interesting philosophic meandering...
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
