There ain't no way in hell I'm getting that flu shot now! I don't care if the odds are one bazillion to one. I'm not gonna risk it. Thanks for the post, V.

Yeah, I heard about this a while back. She can talk fine when she's running. As soon as she slows down, she's got issues. She's sort of like Jason Statham in Crank.

Something to think about - I know a lot of people who have told me they won't vaccinate their children for measles because of the minute risk it *might* cause (and that is highly debatable, especially since the ingredient that supposedly causes the damage isn't in the vaccinations). They tend to go a bit quiet when I point out that I *personally* know 2 people made deaf by measles, one who was left brain damaged by it, and one of my cousins died from it. Remeber Helen Keller? Deaf and blind from measles. There may be a minute risk with vaccinations, but there is a hell of a lot bigger risk from the diseases they prevent. Just as long as you remember that you are a hell of a lot more likely to be killed by the flu than you are to get this reaction.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Measles versus the overblown swine flu, which is just the regular flu? I'd say that's apples to oranges if I ever saw it.

Fuck this vaccination and all of the sheeple who stand out in the rainy cold for 5 hours in a line waiting to get it amongst MANY people. Anyone see the irony there?

Don't actually disagree with you that the hype over 'swine flu' and the pressure to vaccinate is overblown, just pointing out that there is this idea that vaccinations are dangerous because they occasionally (and very rarely) have side effects. If you are in an 'at risk' group, medically speaking, then rather than yelling 'oh shit, look what happened to her, no way' you should consider that the disease is a hell of a lot more dangerous than the vaccination. As for the general public getting flu shots, your choice but personally I don't bother. My grandmother on the hand is at high risk and she gets them every year. I got rubella vaccinations, my male cousins didn't - not such an issue for men as for women. Make your choices based on whether it is appropriate for you to get vaccinated or not, not because of a media beat up story.

Don't get me wrong - I think vaccinations for things like polio and Measles are very necessary and worth the risk because the personal benefits AND the public health benefits far outweigh the possible risks. I'm not one of those anti-vaccine quacks.

I just can't believe the media fear and "YOU HAVE TO GET IT!" hype surrounding an untested, rushed out the door vaccine for a virus that for the most part, if you get it, will leave you down and out for 3-7 days and go away quicker than the common cold.

Again, totally agree with you - but this story is just as big a media beat up, probably even more so (and look at how many people just said 'that's it, not getting it' based on have watched this latest episode in "News! The World Is Out To Kill You!")

yikes!! i have never heard of such a thing. pre existing condition that was triggered by the shot?

i'm getting my flu shot this weekend, the regular one, h1n1 is not available to me at this time. i can't risk bring the flu into my home and putting my little one at risk. we have the swine flu on campus now. i saw a boy yesterday in the health clinic and he was miserable, poor baby.
Until we meet again, may God
Hold you in the palm of his hand.

Yes, for the most part. If you are lucky enough to be in the 99% that will do fine with the swine flu. But if you are in the unlucky 1% that will die from the swine flu....then maybe the vaccine would have been worth it.

I literally watched a 39 yr. old healthy man die yesterday from the swine flu. And another 24 yr old pregnant woman who we had to send to another hospital because she was so critical. She will probably die too.

So while I agree it may be hyped in the media, you have to decide if you want to take the one in a million chance of ending up like this girl. Or the one in a million chance of dying.

Sounds like a wash to me. Roll the dice.
