This really sucks. I thought it was coming on earlier. Thirty more minutes until live at 12:00 a.m. Tomorrow is a workday.

The stage is absolutely breathtaking. Good Youtube sound...The decibels level on the stadium must be heart stopping!

Court reporter. But I'm determined to watch most of this concert since it's one of my top three bands of all time. Finally has started at around 12. Love their new song Magnificant live.

Looks like they're plugging the new cd early. First two songs, BORING. They better pull out a hit next or I'm pullin' the plug on it.

Awesome stage setup though, would be something to see live.

Ok, here's the 3rd tune. Not really a hit but it is one of the two good ones off the cd, "Magnificent".

I've see the setlist for a few shows early on in the concert, and I was disappointed certain songs were left off. It seems like from the reviews I've read some said the concert really takes off halfway through. Of course, every concert-goer has their own take.

Agreed. The global live concert series.

Watch, the Jboyzz are gonna schedule one for next year. Del Mar auditorium.

Gotta give it to U2 though, they're capitalizing on the free global audience. Fourth track from the new cd came on now. Guess they wanna break the million mark next week.

Bono's voice has really deteriorated in the higher register, much thinner. That's what I noticed first thing when I bought the new CD and saw him on Letterman with the new songs.

One of the best bands still touring for sure. I hope this boosts their album sales. These guys put the money into their show... I like it. That's a multi-million dollar stage setup.

Check it out:

Despite $300 Million in Ticket Sales, U2 is Barely Breaking Even

Image

As U2 gets ready to take the stage again this weekend at the Rose Bowl Sunday evening, they will have performed 42 shows in front of almost 3 million fans. They've broken attendance records and grossed nearly $300 million. What they haven't done, however, is make any money. The elaborate tour stage is sucking up all the profit.

The expense of hauling around their giant spider-like prong stage is so immense even after months of sold out shows, they aren't swimming in cash. The 170-ton, $40 million four-pronged stage is so enormous that it takes a full two days to dismantle.

After four months on the road, they are finally hitting the break even point. Just in time to dismantle the stage for the winter. Afterall, it is far too large for indoor venues.

When the band resumes their tour in the spring and hit the road, they'll still be burning through $750,000 a day in just overhead costs as three separate models of the biggest stage in rock history travel around the world. Each stage itself will be attended by a separate crew.

U2's extravagance comes amidst a troubled economic climate that shuns over-the-top, grandious affairs and at a time when the band's latest album, "No Line on the Horizon", is not doing as well as their past efforts.

The albums first two singles were not hits, and the songs aren't getting much radio air play. Overall sales have also been slow - it took U2 seven months to reach sales of 1 million.

These days most artists make their money touring, rather than through album sales. So if the band isn't turning a profit on the road, their music isn't making them a whole lot of money.

Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. said:

"In the end it’s investing in our future. Not in our future financially, in our future musically – ‘cause at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. We’ve all made enough money to live for the rest of our lives quite comfortably.”

By the time the tour ends, which will likely be next year, U2 manager Paul McGuinness said that it will likely top the Rolling Stones' $558 million "Bigger Bang" tour to come come the top-grossing tour of all time. But because of the enormous expenses involved, it won't be the biggest moneymaker.

At the beginning of the US tour, Bono commented:

“I want to put on an extraordinary show, but I’d like to own my house when it’s over.”

Other than the fact that their new album is easily the worst album they've ever made, it was fun to watch that show on video and see a lot of things I missed when I was there in person in Chicago.

The tour definitely looks amazing, even if it doesn't pull at the heartstrings the way their shows used to do.

The sound was very good, very clear and very loud. I don't think these guys use anything more than minimum BGV help. Not that it would matter, the place was like being at a Premiere League Soccer game. U2 knew going in, they wouldn't get rich off of this tour. Seeing as they're all set for life, this was really a cool thing for them to pull off. Personally, the only live show I can say was better than this was Pink Floyd at the Oakland Coliseum.
My only disappointment was that they didn't play anything off of October, but that is more of an afterthought.
I didn't mind the political aspects of part of the show. It didn't disrupt the flow of things at all. Despite Bono's perceived arrogance, he really has an affinity for America, and the fans seem to know that.

Hey GB, where in that mass of humanity were you? Looked like an awesome concert. We were trying to spot you in the crowd but Bono kept turning out the lights.

Youtube really should start hosting these regularly. Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen, and so many other bands would stand in line to get that kind of pubilicty.

I'm anxious to find out what the viewership was. It had to be just massive. They played it over again immediately after.

I'll have to watch if they air it again. I wasn't field level, a little bit higher, a bit to the left and below the old Superbowl box seats.
Did they make any Audio gaffows? Obviously, you would really have to have your shit together to do this on a live broadcast. Without a monster sponsor like RIM, a band who needs the money probably wouldn't attempt to do this. These type of things are what separates the upper tier from everyone else. Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, maybe Van Halen could do this. Journey, Foreigner, Steely Dan, etc., I'm not so sure.
With all of Journey's sound problems on this last tour, you would be asking a lot, I think.

An indoor venue might work but outdoors would be tricky. They were filming for a DVD last night so they had stuff already in place to make it come of as a video shoot.
