Weekend o' ROCK w/KISS & STRYPER

I've NEVER seen 3 independent concerts in the space of 4 days before, and somehow I managed to get there this weekend. I'd purchased Nashville Stryper tickets the day they went on sale, while I was in Memphis for the Journey show. First time ever I've purchased from Ticketmaster over an iPhone, and that was scary... LOL!

So then I find out KISS was playing very close to me the night before, and after debating whether I wanted to cram that show in before a long drive to Nashville the next day, I ended up getting a 9th row ticket just a couple of days before. Was EXTREMELY glad I decided to go! DANG, those dudes put on a great show, and their stage is incredible.

Stryper recently added a date very close to me and now after a KILLER show last night, I'm going to see them tomorrow also. :) Went to the concert last night with Stephen Patrick from Holy Soldier, and we had a BLAST. Also ran into MR member Mick - very cool dude! Will have to post some pics soon, maybe after tomorrow.

BTW, Mick told me that Jon Cain was doing a show with Madison next weekend in Nashville, so I'm thinking about coming back. Hmm....

I saw HS but they were touring with Eric Wayne on vocals. 92-93 if I remember correctly.

Si, amigo. We hung out all weekend, and I just got home about an hour ago. Took some really cool photos this weekend, and may start a thread to post them in. He still as his stage clothes he wore on the cover of the first H.S. album, and also his solo disc Red Reign. We also ran into Charles Meserole in the grocery story today - he was a studio engineer on all the Holy Soldier albums. He mentioned that David Zaffiro had somehow gotten copies of the isolated vocal/instrumental tracks for Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", and they'd been playing with them one day. Said that Freddie Mercury's cuts were so pitch perfect and precise, they measured them with some sort of device and the needle or whatever it was barely wavered. David apparently has one heck of a studio, and the last time I was up Charles was telling me about some of the cutting edge equipment he has there.

Great songs! I especially like "Love Me", and I have the actual certificate that Myrrh Records gave to Steve when "Stranger" went to #1 on Christian radio hanging on my music room wall. One of my treasures!

Check these songs out: http://www.myspace.com/holysoldier

Listen to "Last Train" & "Crazy" - two of my all-time favorite H.S. songs, from their second album.

DEFINITELY GO! If you liked George Lynch's arms, you should dig Michael Sweet once he takes off his jacket. :) Seriously, those dudes shredded! It was an outstanding performance.

I heard him with Boston last year and was impressed. Main issue is that it's a weeknight and an hour and half drive. Brain is still fogged from jetlag at present; hopefully, by Thurs I be rarin' to go.

Weenie! I was in the car 12 hours for my Nashville trip, and now I'm sitting in a club about to see them again! Went to soundcheck and they actually let a fan come up and sing with them! I was sooooooo close to doing the same. How cool would that be?

Would have been cool to see Stryper on this tour! Does Michael still hit the high-high notes? Not that I would blame him if he couldn't!

He hasn't lost anything in the vocal dept, and has more screams on the new album than the last one. When I saw them in Ft. Worth, TX in 2005, he did all the screams live, but during these two shows he stayed away from the highest of the high screams (like at the end of "To Hell With The Devil"). But that's expected to help preserve the voice. Other than that, he sounds every bit like he used to, and puts on an excellent show -- great stage presence.

If you have the chance to catch them, definitely go.

Finally, Deb, we may have found common ground. I love Michael Sweet, gorgeous and is a great, energetic performer, and loved him as part of Boston on guitar and vocals.

I had read that a band Michael's son was in was going to open for them this tour. How were they?

I wasn't terribly impressed, either. It's better than the last one, though. I also didn't care for him in Boston. He has a good voice but it just doesn't sound right in that band.

There we go. :) Love his voice, great guitarist too, I remember taping this one off our video channel way back in the 80s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIkchk19GV8

Yes, called Flight Patterns -- nice kid, and they sounded great though their style of music isn't really my thing. But the first opening band Manic Drive is AWESOME, and I don't think I've ever had that much fun watching a guitar player before. He had a TON of style and stage presence, and we were tripping out on him. They were a 3-piece band using a lot of backing sequencing and I don't see how he could actually get those sounds off his guitar with the way he was hitting the strings, but like I said... he was completely entertaining to watch and the whole place went nuts for them. Nice guys, too.

This is a horrible live clip I found, but it gives sort of an idea to how he was playing. Just imagine that with more animation and energy against some really driving rockin' songs.

Both very different albums, and both had to grow on me. I listened to them all the way thru over the weekend and really appreciate them now. The played only "Open Your Eyes" from Reborn, and at least 4 songs from the new album. All came off even better live than on disc, kinda like some of the Revelation songs like "Change For The Better".

I went on Michael Sweet's website, and he's engaged to be married again. He posted a letter to his fans October 12th.

More like seven month. The letter was dated Oct. 12, and that's just the official announcement. I went on his site and there he was with the photo and his arms around this woman, and it threw me. He has another really nice letter to his fans in the archives in July, saying it's been five months since his wife died and talking about the hopelessness he felt during her illness, but that he wants his fans to know he's found love again.
