Halloween is my favorite holiday. Always has been. I used to go all out and dress up for the parties but this year decided to stay home. Not really sure why, I just didn't have the "oomph" I needed I guess. That said, with swine flu killing people- I think it's up to about 12 in my state of Kentucky- WHY IN THE HELL ARE PEOPLE TAKING THEIR SICK KIDS OUT TRICK OR TREATING???!!!! My boyfriend is at a family party tonight and has told me that there is a family war going now because his cousin's daughter had swine flu, got treatment, fever broke Thursday night and the cousin is pissed because my guy's daughter asked her to not come to the party. There are babies, a pregnant woman and people in their 70s and 80s and well, they may not want to die from this so good reaon to worry. Then some parents brought their kid around (neighbors) to trick or treat and my guy shakes this little boy's hand after talking to him. He keeps talking to his parents for a while and then mentions that the kid doesn't look too good and the mom says, "Yeah, he's been running a slight fever, we better get him home." So my guy has everyone open the door and put soap in his hand and turn the water on for him so he can scrub his hands and not touch anything. What is WRONG with people?!

How long after someone who has had H1N1 and the fever breaks stay away to be sure?

Here's a solution... make all the sick kids go out in surgeon costumes.

I think it's incredibly rude to knowingly send a sick kid/yourself to school/work/social activities etc.

With that said, all the paranoia about H1N1 is hilarious. If you get this, you're most likely not going to die if you're an average person. All the people I know who have gotten it suffered a lot less than I am right now with this non-contagious sinusitis I've got... I've been in a constant fog for like 3 weeks.

We always went out, whether we sick or not. As long as kids aren't wiping boogers on the candy bowl, I wouldn't sweat it.

actually general rule of thumb is 24 hours fever free though I think with a lingering cough or sneezing you can still be contagious.

That's fine and fair enough. I just love it when people act so ridiculous like the above-mentioned example/situation that I've been in or seen other people in several times in the last month.

when I say "they" I mean the doctors and the schools as far as letting the kids stay. 24 hours fever free. Since you don't have children I'm not sure why you are so concerned. Those of us who do need to know these things.

I don't think being smart and avoiding ANY illnesses is running scared. I have ALWAYS been cautious my whole life. Not just this flu season. Staying home when you or your kids have a fever is common sense and I avoid being around people who I know are sick. Obviously it doesn't protect 100% because we can't live in a bubble, but I do my best. I have 3 kids and have dealt with lots of illness over the years and no one wants to be sick if they don't have to.

I wouldn't fault anyone for trying to stay healthy by washing hands/staying away from sick people. I take vitamins every day, try and eat healthy, definitely exercise all of the time, get good sleep... I should probably wash my hands a bit more, but oh well.

But I've witnessed this in various forms in the last month and this is the kind of behavior I'm talking about:

Person A: sneeze
Person B in close proximity: Looks awkwardly, doesn't say "bless you" or anything else polite (note: I never say anything like that, it's gay), gets shifty
Person C in close proximity: Glares at the person
Person D: Hey! That's the third time I've heard you sneeze the last 5 days. Are you getting the flu?

There was an article in like the manners or etiquette column a week or two ago saying how the flu paranoia is making people downright rude. I agree.

But yes, as I said above, anyone knowingly showing up at work or sending kids to school with a fever or other serious symptoms is rude and deserves to be glared at, yelled at, ostracized etc. Especially with kids when it's the parents who are too cheap to pay for a babysitter or take a sick/vacation day to help their kid. That's bad parenting.

On the other hand, when I get a cold or a little sinus infection this winter, I'm not gonna stay home. Sorry.
