Nicolas Cage in Financial Ruin

I don't get how someone who made the kind of money he did ends up like this. It seems to me the stars from the old days didn't buy tons of mansions in different areas and keep accumulating like the new stars do. I bet they banked a lot of their money and owned only two homes, not castles and such like Cage.

INSIDE STORY: Nic Cage Blames Advisor for Financial Ruin

How could one of Hollywood's highest paid actors find himself owing $6.3 million in back taxes and deep in money troubles? The answer is easy if you believe Nicolas Cage.

In a lawsuit filed Oct. 16 in Los Angeles, the National Treasure star, 45, claims that his longtime business manager, Samuel J. Levin, duped "lined his [own] pockets with several million dollars in business management fees while sending Cage down a path toward financial ruin."

That journey began in 2001 when Cage – whose next movie is the crime drama Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans – hired Levin to oversee and manage his business interests, investments and finances. Levin did not return calls seeking comment. A rep for Cage had no comment.

On The Market
Though Cage claims it was only recently that he learned the gravity of his financial condition, the actor started selling off some of his prized possessions months ago. In April, Cage bid farewell to his Bavarian castle, selling it to his German advisor, lawyer Konrad Wilfurth.

Now he has placed other homes on the market in California, Las Vegas and New Orleans, where two of his residences – each worth at about $3.5 million – are up for auction Nov. 12, according to the that city's Times-Picayune. Regions Bank foreclosed on Hancock Park Real Estate Co., the owner of Cage's properties, for $5.5 million in unpaid mortgage debts, the newspaper reported.

Tax Trouble
Cage's home liquidation comes as earlier this month the U.S. government placed a tax lien on his vast real-estate holdings because of $6 million in unpaid taxes dating from 2007, according to court papers. In addition, the Internal Revenue Service has another lien for more than $350,000 in unpaid taxes dating from 2002 to 2004.

East West Bank also filed a breach-of-contract complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court that claims Cage had failed to repay a $2 million loan that was extended this past August.

In the lawsuit filed against his business manager, Cage says he "relied on Levin to handle his financial affairs to ensure that he and his family would have a financially secure future built on the foundation of the substantial monies Cage earned through years of hard work."

But "he is now forced to sell major assets and investments at a significant loss and is faced with huge tax liabilities because of Levin's incompetence, misrepresentations and recklessness." (Interestingly, Cage sold off his rare comic-book collection in 2002 for more than $1.6 million, a year after hiring Levin.)

Now as the actor gets ready to hit the big screen again this fall, he faces "catastrophic losses" in upwards of $20 million. The next court hearing in the lawsuit is scheduled for February 2010.

Can't fucking stand this guy. The only movie I ever liked with this asshole was Con Air.

Con Air was fantastic...but I also have a fond liking towards Gone In 60 Seconds.

I never understood celebrities anyway. What use does anyone have in multiple homes, let alone mansions? I would understand maybe one for residence and then maybe a camp on a lake, but if you waste your money on multiple mansions, skip on your taxes, and complain about financial ruin...he probably deserves it.

It's always someone else's fault.

Couldn't possibly be his own fault, owning... uh... how many homes was it now? Story doesn't say but it mentions Cali, Vegas and 2 in New Orleans, that's at LEAST 4. You know what, Nick Cage? Develop a better interviewing process next time you hire someone to handle millions of dollars.

Maybe if his movies didn't SUCK, he's have more money available to him.

Guess what Nick. I have a job that offers me health insurance and I can't even take it because even through the company, it's way too expensive. I don't feel sorry for you. "Waaaaah, this guy mishandled my money and now I have to sell 28 of my houses, waaaah." Dick.

Seems to be a "status" contest among the hollyweird elite, more than anything. A Bavarian Castle? Gimme a fucking break. This dipshit went from a Bavarian castle to White Castle. Enjoy waking up with shit stains from sliders, you asshole.

Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Boy, those back taxes will getcha every time. You don't fluff with the IRS. That being said, in this day and age it's hard to feel sympathy for someone who's distraught over having to sell their Bavarian castle. and their house in Las Vegas... ... and two houses in New Orlean...and...and... Please.

I just don't get it... what's the point? If I were super wealthy, ok maybe I'd want to own a nice vacation home... but home after home? Fuckin ridiculous. Like Dan said, it's all a dick measuring competition among these blowhards that have nothing else to do.

Hollywood- Just put half in cash. Then gold & platinim that you keep in a safety deposit box & NO JEWELRY . Rare art & antiques is good. KPM's can never be made again or Rookwood. I forgot to add museum quality American Brilliant Period 1876-1917 cut glass.

Why not jewellery? (By the way, that's not a typo - the word really is spelled with the extra 'le' in Canada  ).

We have the same problem with the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) up here. It took me eight months, but I was in the right and won the full amount of the tax refund I was entitled to - I felt like Batman. :P (We really need a decent female superhero - Wonder Woman in a bustier and hot pants just seems silly. And the lasso of truth? :? How lame is that?).

Cage should have taken the advice of stars like Oprah and Tom Cruise - no matter how much money they make, they know where every dollar goes and sign every cheque. Good advice for everyone.

He was good in Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation. Most of the other stuff he's the same character.

Thought he'd be smarter than this.

Face Off was such a stupid movie. I don't make a beeline for too many of Nick's flicks.
He's never been one of my favorites. Con Air was good though.

He was such a great actor, quirky, loved him, until he started taking himself so seriously and had plastic surgery to look younger and came on a latenight show with a leather outfit and a facelift it looked like. It was sad watching him that night.

You never really know how you would handle big money until you get it. I have seen seemingly frugal people get some money in their hands, and the next thing you know they have no boundaries at all - it's gone in a very short time.

Maybe the old school celebrities knew about the depression and such and knew the money wouldn't be there forever and so saved it, but the new stars think they are going to be getting those 10 -20 million dollar paydays (minus agent's fees, etc) forever and spend, spend, spend, and then the parts aren't paying as big or fewer and farther between or dry up, and what they have is overhead they can't sustain plus other bad investments like opening restaurants, high-return portfolios that go bust, and a housing market that plummeted, etc.

Understandable on a conceptual level, but after seeing so many ruin themselves before you, you'd think these buffoons would eventually learn, right?
