Postby Jeremey » Mon Nov 02, 2009 6:27 pm

Please....Here's a pretty great DVD release....

Single DVD is both standard DVD and Blu Ray release

With documentary, behind the scenes footage, etc....

And a new song released just weeks before to the fan club....

I think one point to take from this is this. Would you rather pay 10 bucks for a non-enhanced disc (Despite talk of 4X HD being used for the recordings) or would you rather pay 20 bucks and get the Blu-Ray, plus the second standard disc (if you haven't upgraded yet), along with the extra behind scene footage and what not? One package, no need to check if one is in stock if the other is out, etc.
A lot of Studios are going this route, primarily Disney.
AC-DC's Wal-mart exclusive also used this approach.

I'd rather have the choice of both... want to buy the high quality for my "must haves," for something that I like but don't NEED to have I'd rather shell out a little less and get less

depends on the video authoring quality of the disc, not the cameras it was shot with. If the dvd is good quality, just buy it. It it LOOKS like it cost $10, buy the better version. 90% of the behind-the-scenes footage is pretty useless to me (at least for a concert video), so it becomes a question of quality versus price.

Good points.

Some bands really do behind the scenes/extra features well though. Dream Theater does band member instrument rig features, they do whole band commentary tracks over the entire DVD where they share tidbits about the songwriting/the performance itself/some humor, and they'll give you the animated cartoons and artwork featured on their tour video show on the DVD. I also dig band member interviews as extras. That kinda stuff is worth paying for if you're even a somewhat big fan of the band.

Stupid stuff like tour slideshows/pictures, on-screen setlists, or really short video vignettes that don't have anything of substance in them, on the other hand, are NOT worth paying for.

For Wal-Mart's combo price of 20 dollars, I'd rather have the Blu-Ray option available from day one, than have to wait two or three months after the standard disc is released and HOPE an enhanced version gets released. For those who say it's an issue of a cheaper price attracting more buyers, If someone can't afford the 20 dollar price but can afford the 10 dollar offering, maybe they shouldn't be spending money on DVDs anyway.

I don't even think HD/Blu-Ray can help that god awful performance.....and that's a revelation you can bank on!

I think a lot of it depends on whether or not the customer springs for the Blu-Ray or not. Players still aren't cheap, and I haven't found all that many movies where the increase in quality is all that noticeable. The difference in quality from dvd to Blu-Ray isn't nearly as much as the difference of vhs to dvd. As long as Blu-Ray prices stay high, only the people that have to own the best will spring for it. The rest will be happy with "good enough"

All the blu ray players at Best Buy that are under $200 are "refurbished". F that! The cheapest was $140. I haven't checked other sources. But - Hell no. I will wait with my regular player until prices come down. The blu ray movie prices are starting to drop a little, but I'm not about to blow upwards of $200 for a stupid player. They got me with the regular dvd player in 2000... damn thing was over $250. I still have it and it can't play anything by store bought. The player I have now... $40!! :D

define 'high',,,and are you talking about the discs or the bluray players.....

More than half of the people who own a DVD-player, shelled out at least $200 to buy a DVDplayer back when they got one,,,, these days you can get a good bluray player for $200 or less....
Also, except for the last couple of years where DVD prices have gone down , between 98-2008, in average a DVD movie would cost you between $20-$25 , which is the average cost for a bluray player right now....
I think the main reason some people havent made the transition is a) They dont have the TV that would take full advantage of bluray technology & 1080p or b) they dont wanna rebuilt their entire collection from scratch, again! ,,,,, or both......

Bluray is here to stay and I think within the next 4 years more than 80% of the current DVDplayer owners will have a bluray system in their homes. One major change will happen when auto manufaturers start having bluray players in their new vehicles .....

I'll buy a PS3 when I get around to it, but right now my TV is 720 so I'm not in a huge rush anyway.

Best buy is selling a insignia blue ray player for $99 (not a refurb), i was there yesterday, reviews are not bad for this item and ive seen several well known brands for $150 this week. I got a sony blue ray shipped to my door tax included for $160 a year ago....your just not looking in the right places(none of these prices are for refurbed items) :D

My information was based on an online search, not an in-store search. Obviously inventory will vary from store to store. I was just looking for the "general" state of affairs with this blue ray business which, admittedly, I know nothing about, other than I am not rebuying all my frickin' movies again.

Here... a Sony player for $150, BRAND NEW....... you dont have to replace your old DVD's,,,, the blura player actually upscales them to 1080p and makes them look better,,,, not as good as bluray of course,....
I see more and more bluray movies coming with a $10 mail in rebate if you own the same movie on DVD,,,,
