First and foremost, he is a great songwriter. One of my favorites. His first record is a classic and he wrote so many huge hit including Heart's 'These Dreams'. He released a new album last year and it is very good, though not as good as the first. He had a song on Josh Groban's second record.
I have never heard him referred to as a Christian artist though. Not that it makes any difference to me, but this label can kill an artist's career. Just look at King's X, they always had spiritual lyrics but were building a strong audience and their third record 'Faith Hope Love' was doing really well until Rolling Stone did an interview that pronouced them as a breakthrough Christian artist even know the band has always insisted they were not. Within three weeks that record was off the charts and they lost their chance of mainstream success.
