Michael Angelo is a great guitar player. But when it comes to the arpeggios, sweeping, combined with SPEED, he has NO chance vs Mills.....

To me, sweeping arpeggios is a waste of time, and not very melodic....I'd rather listen to MAB than a guy like Mills anyday. Not to knock your guy. There is a lot of wasted motion in Mill's style....

Playing scales isn't very creative....there is no 'music' in there. Just up and down. PWNED! :lol:

Neoclassical wanking, to me, isn't musical. It's no different than rap music...there's no emoting. Just precise, scalular note execution.

Appreciating it is no different than appreciating diving or gymnastics. The execution is what gets graded. Sure, give Mathew Mills or Yngwie or Michael Angelo (fucking idiot name) a whole slew of 9.9 or 10.0's...

But communicating emotion, they do not do.

Purely from a technical viewpoint....the emotional players are the ones that carefully walk the line on timing or note selection...but never both. Players like EVH, Stevie Ray, Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Chet Atkins, etc....all true geniuses at their instruments....have done so because they have played with the use of micro-tuning (through bending) or creative rhythmic timing...

But let me stress, none of the above players did so while saying to myself...let me convey a little tension by "tugging that string a micro-tone sharp..."

They knew their sound would convey the msg, because they're just that good.

To me, none of the technical monsters (save for a few, like Vai and Petrucci) have ever considered anything other than pure execution of the notes...to me, that's not musical.

There was always something magical about EVH's playing in the 80s. Someone equated it to falling down the stairs and always landing on your feet. When you let go and stop worrying about playing 32nd notes to a metronome....you'll notice more girls showing up to your performances. At the same, you'll start being a conduit for emotion, instead of a faraday shield preventing it from getting out.

Great playing, note choice, phrasing, and great clean tone. I love that solo, and I'll bet a lot of people have never heard it!

I am definitely partial to melodic players like Neal, Lukather, EVH, etc. But I do appreciate a good technical player that knows how to make the technique emote/speak musically like Petrucci or Satriani and yes even Yngwie. Yngwie gets derided for being formulaic but I think he's a good emotive player when he's at his best.
