Going TV shopping today. We haven't had to buy a new TV in about 10 years, no idea about the pros and cons of Plasma vs LCD. We've been doing some Internet research and I'm leaning towards LCD based on our needs, but I'm wondering if anyone has any insight they could share.

I had a Plasma,,,, upgraded to LCD,,,,, but the new LEDs are even better

BestBuy has a 47" LG LED and it is AMAZING!!!!!!

B's right. If you have to choose between plasma and LCD, then get LCD, but if LED is an option, it's the way to go. The picture is more crisp and brighter.

I bet the inventor of the LED never saw all of this coming. Light bulbs, tail lights, flash lights, tv's.

Isn't LED a lot more expensive?

I would NEVER choose an LCD over a Plasma if I were buying a big-screen (45"+). They just don't look as crisp and I don't like the matte screen. Haven't spent any time with an LED to know about those.

The biggest drawback to Plasma is you gotta watch out for burn-in, but that was really a problem with the early plasma TVs more than anything.

However, needless to say, if you buy a nice TV of either kind, you're going to be pleased. It's amazing how far we've come with TVs

Probably about $1000 - the LCD we're considering is a Sony Bravia 46", on sale for around that price. Remember, this is Canada - everything costs more here . Any LED's we've looked at are at least 50% more than that. Right now we have 2 old 27' clunkers - when the other one craps out and we need to replace that, hopefully by that time we'll both have jobs and can look at LED's. At this point I just want to be able to read the instructions on NHL10 (I'm addicted to that game but have no idea what I'm doing ) without having to sit right in front of the TV.

My brother was here about 3 years ago, and I used to have this 36" picture tube tv. It was HEAVY! Anyway, we're watching football, and he said, "When are you going to move into the 21st Century?" And I'm like "What?" I loved that tv. He said "That fuckin thing is a relic." It took someone else to point out that my tv was old fashioned. It bit the dust not long after that.

lol - actually I can't believe 2 two we have, have lasted that long (and we've never had to even change the batteries in the remotes )

Funny story & yep, I can relate. I have an old 27" tv that I keep in my daughter's room & that thing is about 3 feet deep & weighs twice what my 50+" flat screen does.

I have no idea how we're going to move the heavy old mother (and our solid wood mother-of-a-unit that it sits in) to put the new one in here. Husband just had back surgery a month ago and he's not supposed to do that kind of stuff. Guess I'll just have to flex my muscles and suck it up!

I have a 27" TV that I put in my woodworking shop that I got in high school. I'll be 43 at the end of the month so that thing is about 25 years old! Still has a really clear picture and never have had any problems. It's a Montgomery Ward brand.

The 32" in my exercise room is about 11 years old and also no problems. It's a Sanyo.

Seriously, do what Rick said! Give a couple neighbor kids five bucks each to move that thing. Sure beats having both you & your husband needing back surgery.

They have incredible resolution. My in-laws have one of those DLP tv's, a BIG one, and I was over there trying to watch football, but I couldn't even get into the game because I was so busy checking out how good the picture was.

Just picked up a Sharp 1080 120hz for 900 today, that was just too good of a deal to pass up(don't even really need it,Its a third tv , you can never have too many 52 inchers

Ended up getting a Samsung instead of the Sony - it was a better deal. And didn't have to recruit the neighbor kids to move the other one - the stand/unit it was in was sitting on top of a rug so once we emptied everything out we were able to just push it down the hall, TV and all, into the bedroom (thank God we have hardwood, not carpet).

I'm in heaven - already played Rock Band, NHL10 coming up, Flames game on tonight - screw the laundry.

We now actually have 5 working TV's in the house - time to sell a few, I think

I'm glad everything worked out. The Samsung has a great picture too. CNET gives Samsung the top two spots in their LCD reviews.

I'm a bit of a home theater junkie and have listened to this debate for years. Let me state that I happen to own several plasmas as well as several LCD's. There is absolutely, positively, ZERO comparison when it comes to the picture quality of a plasma screen versus LCD. It's simply not close. While you'll find many LCD owners (and again, I own several) tell you the LCD's are "better" (whatever that means), I've yet to encounter a single home theater expert who will tell you this. The only issue where plasmas really don't do well is a room that has a ton of ambient light flooding your viewing area. I do most of my viewing at night and have a home theater for daytime viewing, so it's not much of an issue for me. Plasma will always offer FAR better black levels and will give you the film-like quality that I've yet to see even the best LCD's on the market reproduce! If you're a member of Costco, you can get a 54" Panasonic (far and away the best bang for your buck) for a SUPERB price, and it's 1080p! For the record, I own Pioneer plasmas and think they're better than Pansonic, but not measurably enough to justify the significant price difference between the two manufacturers.

Bingo - one of the main reasons we decided on LCD - our TV room is flooded with sunlight during the day, and I like it that way. I do wish we could have afforded an LED - those babies we saw on display today looked awesome! but so far I'm very happy with what we ended up buying.
