Has Anyone Here Ever Had Ear Surgery?

As some of you know I’ve been plagued with ear infections for the past several months. I’m going through this mess again. This is my 5th attack since summer. My doctor wants to do surgery on my ears—both of them!!! I don’t know anything about that & when I try to ask him questions, he gives me a lot of doctor double-talk. Can anybody explain this stuff to me in layman’s terms? If I go through with the surgery, how long will I have to stay in the hospital? How long will it take to fully recover altogether? How much is it gonna hurt? Is it a one-time thing, or would I have to go back for “touch-ups”? Would I regain all my hearing or only part of it? How long could I expect to be on medical leave from work? Is it going to leave any noticeable scars?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I never had surgery before & so I don’t know what to expect. I'm kind of nervous about the thought of being put to sleep. I've heard horror stories about people who go in for a "simple" procedure & they never wake up.

I've had MANY surgeries, too numerous to count! My advise......if you're doctor doesn't have answers to your questions, FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR!!! I would NEVER trust a doctor who doesn't explain things and if you aren't comfortable with him, RUN THE OTHER WAY!!! There are always risks with any surgery and you should be fully aware and informed about all the risks and complications. This is your body you are talking about. Don't just leave it all in the hands of a doctor. Be proactive and do as much research as you can. Try www.webmd.com for starters.

I have had a few myself.Talk to another Dr and see what he or she says.I agree they need to tell you about it.Also go and check out the site she gave you.ST that is.Let us know what happens

I was diagnosed with auto sclerosis when I was in my 30's. My left ear had arthritic bone damage, I had a fake ear drum set in. (I'm BIONIC!) Okay, seriously, I hear fine out of my left ear, but my right ear has nerve damage, it is shot to hell, I wear hearing aids to balance sound. I usually use them in rooms where the sound does not echo, don't need them in the streets, clubs, etc.

Set aside any fears you have and acquire as much professional advice and research as you can. Get a second or third opinion, double check what exactly is wrong with your ears and see if oral meds won't suffice, surgery may not be necessary. Of course we are all different, what works for one might not work for the other.

Just so you know, equilibrium and anesthesia mix. My surgery went fine, but recovery was brutal! I woke up with my head spinning out of control like it was in a dryer! Made me dizzy for a couple of weeks at least. I am not trying to scare you just inform you of what might occur when you wake up. That was the only recovery “issue” I had with ear surgery, it took a week or so to come out of it. I walked around looking like I was drunk, but I laughed about it later.

I think a positive attitude is essential. Think of having surgery as a means to an end rather than a scary procedure.

I can.

Plain simple terms: find a doctor that doesn't speak in double talk and actually answers the questions you ask, becuase you will have more question down the line and you'll want to know that they will be addressed and because it's really really important to answer your patient's questions thoroughly and you are a crappy doctor if you don't.

Seriously, Jason people on this post are right, DEFINATELY get more than one doctor's opinion. What I have is inherited, so they say, but they are not sure. Get more than one doctor's opinion and continue to seek advice and guidance before you proceed further. Good luck, dear.
