Halftime, The Super Bowl, and suck-ass TV

Postby S2M » Sat Nov 14, 2009 4:04 am

Television exists for the SOLE purpose of selling products.

The Superbowl halftime show got me to thinking about how halftime rules the SB. Isn't this supposed to be about FOOTBALL. Advertising time approaching 4 million for 30 SECS of commercial?!

Personally, I think TV was invented to sell shit. Shows are just a neccesary evil(as far as the advertisers are concerned).

When the halftime show PLUS commercial time is deemed more important than the actual game - we got a problem, bunky.

And in this day and age when primetime network TV sucks in so many ways I can't even count, I'm surprised TV even exists at all.

Which makes me wonder who these test audiences are who beta test these sitcoms, reality shows, and 40,000,000 lame police-type dramas...

TV exists for the sole purpose of selling shit. Fuck the super bowl. I can't wait to see what the newest side is at KF - fucking - C.

You know there is a button. An off and on button. You can push down on that once and not watch it. Pretty simple isn't it?

Ok good. As for the Super Bowl being a huge commercial? Sure it is. The NFL is a huge sell out. It is the biggest sport in the world(money), so why not play it up?

You have to remember too, that only two teams go to the SB, so that leaves the other 28 teams' fans really not caring who wins. Unless you were a Stealers or Cards fan last year, or a Springsteen fan, my guess was you watched for the commercials, even though the game was perhaps one of the best ever.

I used to enjoy the Super Bowl when there was ONE week between the Conference Championships and the SB. Honestly, like I mentioned in another thread, I haven't really been INTO it since Sanders retired. As much as I clamor about the Pats - that's just basically a function of geography for me. I like watching good football. It is extremely rare that you get two deserving(argue over the word if you wish) in that game. And now that you mention it - last SB really was one of the worst ever. From a referee standpoint, and from an football standpoint. Blast me if you wish, but AZ got hosed in that game.

I guess it is fun to have a SB party. Hell, I even enjoy doing that. But it has morphed into some sort of commercial juggernaut of wacky proportions. Player profiles that are laughable. Players doing stupid commercials. Ex-players trying to cement themselves as class commentators. Hell, I'd rather see Cornhoser up there than Emmitt Smith. How would you feel if before each Journey show in 2001 you had to sit through a 15-minute retrospective on the career moves of Augeri, Tall Stories, and The Gap - before the concert began?

Today's music scene is weak. Not only Today's as in(right now), but Today's(as a whole)....If you can't make it so the act sings live(and I mean each and every one of them), then that is a sad state of affairs. If not, what's the point? Nothing other than to promote the bands latest and not-so greatest effort.

The halftime show has become a caricature of itself....IMHO.

That was intentional Lynn. They stole that SB from Seattle. I will never forget that abortion of a game. That was a joke.

Take your bets. I'm here.

It's just a hater thing, Lynn. Haters can come up with any assumption or excuse they want, it won't change the fact we are 6 time, 6 time, 6 time, 6 time, 6 time, 6 time NFL Champions. At any time, they can bow down to our league leading 6 Super Bowl trophies and ask if they are worthy enough to kiss the ground we spit on. (*laughs)

And now you're in Orlando, away from all the snow and misery... lucky! I'm glad to be out of there. Yes, and this is the best time of year! Summer's are awful, but then Erie snow was worse. That snow belt is horrible there! They have had snow off and on since the beginning of Oct. this year  I heard it was near 70 last weekend though. We have 70's right now, no humidity and I'm loving it! I have lived here since out of college, so 19 years now and can't imagine living there again. I do visit now and then though. I love visiting, but living there would be hard!

So you live on the west side of Cleveland? I went to Med. Tech. School on the west side. At Metro Health Medical center and I had to LIVE in a CREEPY dorm there at the hospital! It was from the 1800's and it was like living in a prison cell for 12 months  That's my Cleveland memory!! But I did have friends who lived there and commuted so I got to go to the flats and the galleria and things like that now and then. I remember snow in Cleveland too, but yes, nothing like Erie area snow!

My dad worked for OSHA, and he had to commute from Erie to Meadville for YEARS until they moved the office into Erie. (this was quite a few years ago) Imagine driving in that snow belt back and forth every day  One guy he worked with got in a horrible accident back then and he had a van with chains on the tires and still spun out of control. Dont' miss living in snow!!

Oh yeah, I had a bunch of scary drives home around holiday breaks, especially Xmas... I had to go through Erie/Meadville/the rest of that little area in PA, then into the snow belt in eastern Ohio all the way, then finally home. When I say west side, I live in Westlake... I don't live in the city. It's too shitty now, especially with the economy the way it is. It's a shame cause there are some cool places to live too.

And actually, yeah, unbelievable weather so far. It frosted yesterday morning and was 33 or so, I figured we had seen the last of the unseasonable weather. But then I went outside today... it's like 57... and supposed to be in the 60s tomorrow! Crazy for this time of year. I like living here - it's cheap, easy to get around, concerts come here, love my maligned sports teams, my friends are all here.. I'll be fine livin here if I need to indefinitely. I don't think I could do Florida cause of the summers.

Commercials that are made with the intention of being the best commercials of the year are like 8000x more interesting than football.

Dean has a point regarding the need to attract viewers that wouldn't normally watch because they don't care about the SB teams.

Well, I see the summers as a trade off. We stayed inside in the heat during the long winter there, here I stay in the AC in the summer. We don't have to layer up to go out or worry about how the roads will be. It's not so bad. And Orlando's a good place to be with being near enough to the beaches, ports for cruising, and the theme parks for the kids.

BUT, Florida pay sucks and cost of living is NOT cheap! One thing I loved about Cleveland was my pay! My student pay at that hospital in Cleveland was $2 higher than what STARTED with here in Florida when I moved. Pretty sad! My friends in Cleveland were making $5/hour more than me up there, and cost of living and homes are cheaper up there. The midwest is cheaper! I'll be in Cincy in a week, visiting cousins, and I know it's the same there. Lower cost of living, but decent pay. That would be the worst thing about living here! They tell us we are paid in "sunshine" Like that pays the bills!!
