World's Largest Cruise Ship Ready To Sail

Oasis of the Seas, larger than life on the ocean's horizon Friday morning, swaggered into Port Everglades, sounding her horn as a crowd of onlookers at John U. Lloyd State Park beach let out a cheer.

``Wow!'' cried one early riser, joining revelers with binoculars and blankets to greet the 225,000-ton megaship. `It's so amazing!'' shrieked another. ``It's huge.''

The world's largest cruise ship was accompanied by a flotilla of small boats and doused by water cannons as she headed into her new home port.

At the park, Marsha Scharf, of Chesterfield, Mo., rubbernecked from the beach and thumbed through a text message on her cellphone. ``TJ says `Can you tell which ship we are?' '' she laughed to her fiancé, Tom Smyka, who stood next to her clicking pictures with a digital camera.

Scharf said her son, Timothy J. Scharf, had sent the text message from onboard the Oasis, where he has been working since August as the IT manager. ``It's his 33rd birthday,'' she said.

Dana Steinberg, a retired merchant marine from Hollywood, arrived early at John U. Lloyd Park Friday to behold the mammoth ship, which has seven neighborhoods, including a Boardwalk reminiscent of Coney Island. The ship has not one, but two rock-climbing walls, an ice-skating rink, and 24 specialty restaurants among an array of entertainment and activities. The ship's theater will feature a 90-minute production of the Broadway hit Hairspray, which the cast has been practicing during the crossing.

``It's the largest in the world,'' Steinberg said. ``I've never really been on a cruise, but I love ships.''

Joy Rodeberg, 13, played along the beach with her sisters Sarah, 15, and Rebecca, 8, as the Oasis grew larger on the horizon. ``My dad told me about it: It's the world's largest ship,'' said Joy, toting a welcome poster.

The Oasis, carrying crew and construction workers, braved high seas and hurricane force winds in the North Atlantic Ocean, which stretched the journey from its shipyard in Turku, Finland to Fort Lauderdale to 14 days -- two days longer than planned. But Royal Caribbean officials say the giant ship performed excellently in the rough seas.

Now that the ship is in Port Everglades, workers will put the final details on the vessel. Perhaps the biggest job is the installation of some 12,000 shrubs, plants and trees to give Central Park, the first of its kind park-at-sea, a leafy, green ambiance.

Miami-based Royal Caribbean plans a private performance by pop singer Rihanna on Nov. 19, followed by a national television debut on ABC's Good Morning America Nov. 20 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The ship will sail on several promotional cruises with travel agents, journalists and guests before making its first revenue cruise Dec. 1.

The naming ceremony is slated for Nov. 30 during a fundraiser to benefit the nonprofit Make-A-Wish Foundation, which provides treats to children with life-threatening illnesses. Tickets for the event begin at $750 per person.

thank god I worked with bands for years on a 46 000 tonner. Bigger is not better. I spent a year and a half on one of the 72000 ships and it was not the same.

I've only been on one cruise, but it was our favorite vacation ever.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to be on this behemoth though. I wouldn't want to fight the crowds. Can you imagine what the boarding and deboarding process must be like. Gosh there would be luggage strung out for miles.

Why does this thing look like its begging to be have a bomb dropped on it or torpedoed? Guess I'm just getting paranoid.

I'd never set foot on it, even with free passage.

"lights1961", not trying to ruin your vacation. Have a great time.

I'm not usually superstitious, but somehow I'd just have to avoid ordering any drink that comes 'on the rocks' if I were on that thing.
Mind you, maybe it's big enough to sink the ice berg. ;)

I always thought I'd love to go on a cruise...maybe not on this ship though...too huge to be romantic for me.

I just watched two movie versions and a documentary about the Titanic...can't swim either.

I love cruising! Living near so many ports we get to do it once a year. They make the best family vacations and the kids love it. We've always liked how when they were little, we could spend time with them, but then put them in the kids camp to have grown up fun too. There really aren't any other vacations you can do that. You can relax or stay busy. Lots of options on a cruise ship.

I happen to like the bigger ones. There is more to do and more food options. Bigger means more kids so my kids can find friends to hang out with now that 2 are teens. The small one we did in sept. Had hardly any kids and my older ones actually got a little bored.

This ship looks unbelievable! I'd try any ship, any size just to be on one makes me happy  The reason this one looks so funny is because they are making them with more and more balconies. People love the private balcony thing. Think of it as a floating hotel loaded with streets of entertainment inside ;)

Disney needs a supership to compete! I have only done one, the Disney Magic 7 day and my kids were the perfect ages and we had a great time! Being a family of 5, they aren't really affordable to us since we need 2 rooms or a suite. We mainly do Carnival and love their ships. Disney is awesome for young kids though!! My husband missed the gambling though. And the other Disney ships are a little small for me. I miss they don't have the big atrium in the middle like most ships. They did that to utilize space, but it feels too closed in to me. But I wouldn't turn down any cruise!

Yep. They've got the Dream coming out in about a year....and another one coming out in 2013, I believe. Both ships are slated to be about 50-75% larger than the Magic and Wonder (disney's other two ships)...

Take your kids on the DREAM for sure, it will be spectacular.

Love DISNEY by the way, anything they do is great for the kids. Their ships sell out faster than any I know... we always have trouble trying to find space for our customers who want to go...

We were on the Disney ship earlier this fall and loved it and we have no kids.

Never been on a cruise...just KNOW I'd get seasick though.

Were many passengers "puking" their "thousands of dollars" down the drain?

Must admit...it LOOKS fun!

I went on the Disney cruise in 1990 or so. We went from Cape Canaveral to The Bahamas. On the way down there, it was as smooth as silk. Felt like you were on land. You could feel the boat pitch a tiny bit every once in a while. On the way back was a different story. We went through a storm, and it was a fairly rough ride. I pretty much threw up my toe nails. But they have medication for that, and I understand it works quite well. If I ever go on another one, which I'd love to do, I'm taking some sea sick medication with me.

Dramamine, Rick. Make it your friend.

Funny thing... I don't get that way on planes or boats or anything... but make me ride in the back seat of a car and we're gonna have trouble. Weird.

This can only end well.

I've been on one cruise, at the end of high school, and it was the best vacation... barely had to spend time with my parents, lol.

We're lucky none of us get sea sick I guess. We have been in some ROUGH seas too, since generally hurricane season is more affordable  The most I get is a little queezy but somehow I'm always still able to eat. The ships now have such great stabilizers, that when the water is calm, you can't feel it at all. My biggest problem is my equilibrium for a couple weeks after. It takes a while for me to not feel like the house is rocking

I just remembered a time we were on a smaller sized gambling ship. The kind that just takes you out for a few hours and comes back. They don't have those great stabilizers. Well it got really rocky and I was oblivious to the fact the casino areas were slowly emptying out. I felt a little queezy but not like I would be sick. So I need to use the restroom and THAT is when I realized how bad it was! People were laying in the floors in the halls and on the steps. The bathrooms smelled from the massive vomiting. It was AWFUL!! And the worst was being in line trying to get off the ship in those conditions. That's never happened on a cruise ship, but then people have rooms to go to. I was on that gambling boat other times and never saw that. I'm so happy I don't get sick that way because cruising is the best!!
