Caveman’s Post that started an internet rumor
Page, Clapton, Aerosmith… supergroup?
By Michael Roffman on November 25th, 2009

Earlier this week, engineer Kevin Shirley sent fans into a frenzy when he blogged about his recent recording sessions, name dropping the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Bradley Whitford (of Aerosmith). To be fair, who wouldn’t have a cardiac arrest with a line up like that? Them Crooken Vultures, what?

In his online blog, Caveman’s Diary, Shirley wrote on Monday, “There are some really cool things coming up - in December I get to record one of guitars great legends! And I’ve recorded Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Eric Clapton, John Petrucci, Joe Bonamassa, Brad Whitford, Neal Schon, Maiden’s Three Amigos amongst many others, and I am really excited!” But then he goes on to write below, “I am off to the studio to assemble the master for the next Supagroup album (not-to-be-confused with…)”, and then there was a .gif of a Thanksgiving turkey.
Naturally, this speculative post turned online media on its head, and therefore several outlets reported of the new supergroup. Shirley wrote back last night, however, insisting that all the reports were based on an “inaccurate internet rumor” and that “There’s no supergroup planned with fifty guitarists recording, I’m sorry.” But then he goes on to write, “But, as I said before, news when I can. The “supergroup” is just a four piece, and we have an exploratory recording session early next year.”
So, what the hell should we make out of this? Let’s just say Shirley’s probably covering his own ass, but let’s also be somewhat cynical and think, “Well, if it happens, I’ll have to see it to believe it.” It’s not like we don’t have plenty of other god-made supergroups around, already.
But yeah, this would be pretty ballsy.

Sorry I don't get to post anything much any more - after ten years of doing this, it's a bit like Groundhog Day on these blogs, especially as I can't talk about the high profile projects until they're done! Suffice it to say, that life is very busy. All the time - especially as I have two infants in diapers (and no-one outside of family is really interested in that!). My studio work continues non-stop - I love my studio and the SSL Duality console is a total gem to work on. Solid State Logic have been very good at keeping me up-to-date with all the new software - in fact, I have even been Beta testing some stuff for them, and you'd be surprised at the bugs you discover when operating as an engineer rather than as a technical guy. There are some really cool things coming up - in December I get to record one of guitars great legends! And I've recorded Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Eric Clapton, John Petrucci, Joe Bonamassa, Brad Whitford, Neal Schon, Maiden's Three Amigos amongst many others, and I am really excited! Then I am remixing one of Classic Rock's seriously classic albums and January I'm producing what has the promise to be one of the most exciting "supergroups" to come around in a long time. But theory is just that until we see how the dynamics play out in the studio between these superb musicians. And of course the songs will make the real difference.

Hi there - well my post yesterday started an inaccurate internet rumor, which spread like wildfire, even being picked up by the official Gibson site. Many people emailed and I corrected them, but the big guns just had to run with it and wait for the keywords to hit the internet search engines so they'd get traffic to their sites.
There's no supergroup planned with fifty guitarists recording, I'm sorry.
If you believed that, go on and blush. Over my long career I have been very fortunate to work with some of the best in the world, and soon I'm going to record one of the pioneers. That's what's so exciting! But, as I said before, news when I can. The "supergroup" is just a four piece, and we have an exploratory recording session early next year. And that's all. Now, no blogging.... go and get the veggies for Thanksgiving, lay the table, get the kids some ice-cream... and enjoy the holidays with your family. For those of you living outside the U.S., go back to work - you shouldn't be blogging at the office anyway!!! :)
