I'm sorry, am I missing something in this story? Doesn't "49%" still equal the majority? The way this is worded has always been weird to me. It's as if ALL minoritys consider themselves a collective, and as we all well know, they do not. It's not the idea of this that bothers me, it's the wording.

I agree with you. Whatever the projection is, clearly whites are still majority in numbers. I think the author is trying to emphasize that currently whites represents the majority of U.S. populations versus the collection of minorities consists of Blacks, Hispanics and Asians. Base on 2005 US survey, white populations is 67% and the rest which are minorities is 37%. But as I said, one reason of dwindling white population is the result of interracial kids and of course the continued influx of immigrants. Who knows by year 2100 majority of people here in the US are all minorities consist of different ethnicities.
