and this is what I read on one of the gossip sites (RadarOnline):

"...The troubled comic stabbed himself nine times at his Hoboken Apartment in New Jersey at the weekend.

Local Police said Artie Lange’s mother made a 911 call at 9:36 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 after finding the comedian bleeding on the floor.

Paramedics found Lange unconscious with nine “self-inflicted stab wounds,” according to Lt. Det. Mark Competello, made with a 13-inch Wolfgang Puck kitchen knife..."

Dang. I hope if he lives he can fashion himself some kind of life after this.

Poor fella... nothing's worth doing that to yourself over.

Hope he recovers well and finds some help, peace, and meaning.

He must really hate himself to attempt suicide in such a gruesome and painful way. I listened to Stern for about 13 years religiously until around 2001. I haven't really kept up with what's going on with them, but heard Artie was "MIA". I'm really sad to hear he's in so much pain. I hope he gets through this and can find happiness.

I was the same way. I listened to Stern every morning at work and Artie was my favorite character on the show. As of last year he seemed in great spirits and said he was sober. He's had a run in with this before and it pains me to read what I just read. Artie was always cool as hell. Too bad booze and drugs got the best of him. Indeed, that is a terrible way to try to off yourself. I hope he finds happiness as well before it's too late.

He is very talented on the show when I used to listen to it on Clear Channel. I knew he had severe issues, especially when it came out several years ago he was pretending to everyone to be going to a shrink and working on problems and all along he was back on heroin and lying and making up stories about his visits with a shrink. The radio show was stunned at the depth of his lying. But I always felt he might die of a drug overdose, never this. This type of suicide attempt is someone in so much psychic pain. God bless him. I understand where you are coming from, but he's a human being just like the rest of us. If he was your brother, I doubt that you'd say something like that.

You can never know what's going through someone else's mind, or what they're going through. I hate hearing about people doing this sort of thing to themselves, but it's not my place to judge him. I wish him the best and I hope he works out whatever demons he's facing.

I don't know. I feel he might use all of that stuff to mask and cover deep-seated psychological problems and self-medicating. Even if it was just a drug addiction or alcoholism, people just don't take knives to themselves stabbing themselves repeatedly to commit suicide without having some type of psychological issue or depth of despair and, to me, doing it that way is an expression of self-loathing.

If he were my brother, he wouldn't be at this point. Compassion is all well and good but if he wasn't a celebrity, would you give a shit? Wouldn't he be another statistic? This guy has been a bad apple ever since he messed with a bank teller 20 years ago but because he is funny he gets away with things that the rest of us would be held accountable for.
This is my own opinion of course and you if you want to feel sorry for him, fine. I'll save my compassion for the 30,000+ children who will not see the sun set today because of disease, malnourishment and being born in the wrong place at the wrong time. They don't have any control over their destiny, unlike Lange.

My ex's sister had severe depression problems. You would never know it to see her. Really beautiful, smart, kind, loving sister, loving daughter. The baby sister, true light of the family. Tried to commit suicide in her teens. The family was stunned. They got her the best help. After years of seeming to be okay, she moved away to Texas to get her B.S. and was planning to become a veterinarian. In the middle of the night, we got a call she had tried to commit suicide again. It devastated the family. They brought her home and got her the best help available. They had plenty of money so nothing to spare re help. She was kept at home in town. I would see her and she adored her brother and was so sweet that you couldn't imagine the dark places and pain her mind went that made her not want to live. Again, after years of seeming okay again, she finally moved away to finish her M.A. degree in the East and she finally killed herself a year later. She wasn't weak like you would say. She had a mental illness. She suffered from severe depression all of her life that when it hit would be so crippling and take her to such dark places that she just wanted it to end and the pain to go away. I can't imagine not having compassion for her.

Drug addicts need help too, but they have to seek it on their own!!

Was she coking up, doing heroin, running around drunk? I understand there is mental illness. I also understand that less than half of the people who kill themselves suffer from it. We like to think that anyone killing themselves is crazy but that's just not true. Our cultural bias towards suicide blinds us to the facts that some people do it for different reasons. I've never even heard of the guy, and STILL have no idea who he is, so yeah... I still care. If this guy took other people's lives, then I wouldn't feel compassion for him. If what I'm assuming here is true... he's a drug addict that I guess was on Howard Stern? I don't watch that crap so I've never seen or heard of him. I look at him as a fellow human being who obviously had a lot of problems and didn't know how to deal with them. Again, not my place to judge.

There are people every day who take their own lives, and nobody even had a clue that they were contemplating doing something like that. I have a friend who committed suicide, so I can say I've experienced what it's like to lose someone like this. I was pissed off at her at first, but then I just realized that she just couldn't deal with the stresses in her life the way most people do. She gave up on life and it's very sad. She was an ex-girlfriend.

I'm not trying to get you to not be compassionate for starving children, or disease-stricken people. I'm just saying there's room to be compassionate for everyone (except murderers and those who harm others). At least in my book.

I agree with this view point. Ain't got nowt to do with any god. Whether you sympathise or not is down to simple common humanity. I've never heard of the bloke, and know nothing about him, so I won't judge him.

In my case, growing up in the north east it was ignorance and the media who catered our sympathies towards the IRA, With no internet and not many cable television stations yet, available knowledge about the affairs of states overseas was very limited. Bobby Sands was presented as a hero from what I Remember, a symbol of struggle against the oppressive regime, never mind the fact that is was never explained that the majority of people in Ulster were unionists and had decided on their own free will to stay part of Britain. And now to see his sister involved with the REAL IRA and these recent murders so many years later, it's tragic.

She always had help, psychiatrists, medications, new medications if one didn't seem to be working, group therapy.

To say that compassion should be reserved only for those who value the gift of life is kind of pointless, don't you think? That's about the same as a church that ostracizes or excommunicates someone b/c "We don't want 'those kind' in here." It's not the saints that need spiritual guidance----it's the sinners!!! "Those kind" should always be allowed to attend church much in the same way that we as human beings should show compassion towards those who aren't as fortunate as ourselves. Reserving compassion for only those who value the gift of life makes no sense b/c they're not the ones who need it. It's the LOST that do. When someone is too mentally or spiritually lost to see an alternative to suicide, that's when they need our compassion.
