HOLY SHIT that movie was AWESOME!!! I just went and watched it in 3D, and I have to say... it wasn't just a movie, it was an incredible experience! From start to finish, I just sat there with my jaw on the floor, and I think James Cameron just created the movie of his lifetime. He will never top this.

I thought when we were sitting down "I hate wearing these 3D glasses and I'm sure it'll just be gimmicky with the 3D with a few things popping out of the screen". WRONG! Not at all. The entire 3D thing was very subtle (most of the time) and after wearing them for the first 30 minutes... I forgot they were even there! It was the most amazing, immersive and sureal experience I've ever had!

I also thought that since the creatures were all digital, that they'd look retarded like they did in the last 3 Star Wars movies. Wrong again... these creatures looked as real as anything on this earth, and they just really seemed alive. The trees, plants, EVERYTHING.

There are things you can normally pick at with movies... Plot could have been better... actors could have been better, graphics, etc... I don't think (personally) that there was 1 thing wrong with this movie at all! I even thought "Damn, this movie is so long that I'm going to be bored by the time it's over!". I tell you after sitting there for three hours, I would gladly sat there for three more!

Thanks for the review GI. I really want to go see this movie, from an artist perspective. I hear the CGI graphics are phenominal. First I have to get well to go see it.

Story sucked. I'm glad I didn't have to pay for my ticket. Yeah, nice visuals, but I'm not 12 anymore, so I need a compelling story, too. Cameron recycles/plagiarizes just like G. Luca$.

The Road is my favorite film of '09.

Humans invade planet looking for supplies. Natives rebel. Humans send in one of their own to turn the natives....and he ends up siding with them. That does a drastic disservice to the plot, but it's the basic idea. Some reviews I've seen say Aliens meets Dances with Wolves. Just go see it. It isn't the best movie ever made....but it's a lot of fun, fast-paced, and probably some of the best special effects ever. Don't go in with the mindset of seeing something like Schindler's List--it's not THAT moving, but it's very entertaining.

I'll have to see it a few more times to figure out where it stands in the Cameron repertoire, but it's a very good film---and the blue aliens work very well. Any fears you have about them being hokey....they aren't. They stand on their own as characters. Sure it doesn't totally reinvent movies, but it works on it's own, and that's all that matters.

James Cameron just doesn't make bad movies. Even something like True Lies is entertaining and fun to watch....and that's probably my least favorite of his films. He's simply one of the best talents at film-making out there.

I still don't think the technology for 3D is there....but I can see where Cameron wants to go with it. I'm afraid though for every one person like Cameron who uses 3D right that 40 people will use it as a gimmick. We shall see.

It's fuckin' Pocahontas (or Dances With Wolves) meets Ferngully on a planet (a moon, really) called Pandora.

The "alien" race is basically a tribe(s) of 10' tall, blue-skinned Mohicans.

People are excusing the connect-the-dots, paint-by-numbers story because the movie is "eye candy," effects-wise.

You've no idea what a shameless patchwork the film is. It borrows elements from Cam's own films and others, as well as SF books, mythology/lore, Roger Dean's art, and (as far as I could tell) one thing that was a wholesale lift from Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. I couldn't help pick the whole thing apart while I was watching it. Maybe if it hadn't been overhyped, I wouldn't have been so tempted. It was entertaining, but amusing at the same time.

And there's a ginormous plothole that would undo the whole conflict if people weren't so ga-ga over the visuals.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it, Cameron treats his audience like a bunch o' dumbasses. The deus ex machina ending wasn't overt enough for him (and apparently us), so he...uh, never mind.

The strangest (funniest) part is how defensive some of the film's supporters can get.

I might go see this today. If not today, definitely this week. I wasn't going to see it at all because it did not look like my kind of movier at all. But I have to go see what all the hype is about since everyone that has seen it says how amazing it is.

See it Kel, but as stated, go in with no expectations...And I think you'll come out and find that you loved it and enjoyed yourself. 3-D is a must though

Avatar held my attention for 3 hours, which is an accomplishment, and I would LOVE to see more of Pandora and the Na'vi, but it was not the greatest movie I've ever seen by any means. It was cliché as hell, every character was a stereotype and it was incredibly predictable. That being said... if you're ever going to see it, you have to go to IMAX 3D. This film will not hold up on the small screen.

Albeit the story line has been done... visually the film is worth the bucks. Again, I highly recommend the 3D version on IMAX -- spend the extra bucks, know that you won't be blown away by the storyline, and just go ENJOY. Sure it may be Ferngully +, but damn it beats it out visually. Just no Tim Curry.

Surpassed $1B worldwide... and is hot on the tails of eclipsing Titanic as highest money maker of all time.

Personally I liked LOTR better, but I grew up reading the Hobbit and the Triology and having a damn dog named Samwise Gamgee (my brother named him...lol). That film, too, was visually stunning, and a story line that I already adored. I can't wait for Jackson's version of the Hobbit. Bring it!

I was not disappointed at all with Avatar tho. The 3 hours did not drag for me and I saw a midnight show (opening day). It is meant to be seen on 3D Imax tho, and I agree with Sarah that it will not translate well small.
