I always have this debate with my best friend about the type of movies he watches...

He always asks me what movies I rented on Tuesdays. I give him the list. And he'll come back with, 'Dude, where's 'Hangover'? I'll say, 'Nah, not interested'. He'll answer back, 'Whatever dude, you don't know how to pick movies. but i bet you got 'such and such'. Such and such being a cerebral movie.

And we'll go back and forth for awhile. All the while claiming that he watches movies to be 'entertained'. He'd much rather watch a friggin' lame-ass juvenile shit-fuck movie like 'Hangover' than watch a great movie like, for instance, 'Memento', or 'Amelie', or even 'Memoirs of a Geisha'....

the debate goes on.....and I still will NOT watch Avatar when it releases on DVD. And he can't wait for it.

I'm relatively open to both kinds of movies, but if I'm watching a movie alone, I'd much rather watch a "movie movie" than watch a comedy like Hangover by myself. But I also love high octane action flicks or horror/slasher flicks and will often watch those alone as well.

No, don't get me wrong....I like my share of funny movies. My softer side loves Romantic Comedies.

The point is i like cerebral movies, he doesn't.....its all Segal, Van Damme, Arnold, Thomas Jane, Snipes....etc with him.....although he didn't like 'Observe and report'....we both think Seth Rogen sucks ass and he is only in movies because he is friends with Judd Apatow.....

Same way here. Did you see halloween 2? I hung my head in shame almost the whole entire time.

The older I get the less I can watch contemporary movies...I can't watch gory, violent, scary or very sad (like someone dying - I loved Private Ryan but I can never watch it again)...I can't shake the images or feelings and get depressed.
I usually have to watch my Netflix movies alone as hubby doesn't care for what I rent (just watched Julie & Julia, which was okay)...he'd fall asleep. I like "slice of life" , indie, no plot movies...lol. I have this habit of looking at backgrounds/the set/aesthetics more than the movie itself - I like "pretty" images...and, I like relationship movies & movies that make me contemplate. I like funny, but I think I have a different sense of humor than what's out there now. I need some movie recommendations (I did see Amelie).

I thought The Hangover was great for what it is. Movies like that are okay to watch, I think, so long as you balance it out with a variety of other flicks too.

One genre I can't stand to watch at all is horror/murder/wanton violence for no reason... I hate it... I like being spooked/scared but I hate the sadistic ways in which people die in these... I especially hate the Final Destination and Saw series.

See, now I'd pick 40 year old virgin. I guess I like to laugh and be entertained, not have a story that makes me cry. I didn't see the Pianist, but I know it was sad in parts. I like movies to escape reality and to enjoy them so I rarely like a sad movie. Give me the sappy hollywood ending anyday. But all those "guy" action movies above, I can live without too. Every now and then I DO love an action movie. But it depends on the movie and who's in it. I watched Public Enemies last night and enjoyed it. Though I do love Johnny Depp.

Me too, sort of. My film collection probably ranges closer to the action flick section than the serious movie....but I've got a couple of those also, and I'm pretty discriminating on what action movies I like. As far as the serious films go, I might watch one if someone I know raves over it, but while I might appreciate it, most of the time I want something else watching a movie. Just with my sense of humor, most comedies don't work for me. Most people would be falling over laughing, and I MIGHT crack a smile every now and then--more often than not, I'm stone-faced trying to figure out why this is supposed to be funny. Of course, there are exceptions.

I tend to vary my movie-watching by "good film" vs "bad film". For instance, I love Raiders of the Lost Ark, but hate National Treasure, even though they are basically the same general plotl. I like The Rock, but don't care much for Transformers, even though they are the same director. I like Die Hard, but don't care for Sudden Death (Van Damme film), even though they are the same plot with minor variations.

Never cared for the Horror/Slasher flick. The theory of new gruesome bloody deaths to kill your characters one by one never appealed to me. Vampires I can deal with, and generally think the 1st Exorcist movie was pretty good (but the book was much better and less "Hollywood horror-ized"). I thought the first Final Destination had a wonderful premise and could have been really good, but of course it went down the slasher path instead of intelligent movie.

My usual thing for picking a movie is either like the actor, or like the director. I've seen (and enjoyed) enough James Cameron or Michael Mann or John Woo films to know that most of what they do is something I'll probably enjoy. I've seen enough by let's say Russell Crowe or later George Clooney to know they usually pick good films to star in. Maybe it's an actor I've always enjoyed (ie Jackie Chan), and I'm willing to try the average movie in hopes of finding the occasional great one.

How's that for complicated? Honestly though, I'm easy to please. Give me a good script, good director and good cast. If you get those three right, usually the good movie will follow. Then, it's down to personal taste.

I'm not sure I'd call Public Enemies an "action movie", even though it does have a fair amount action in it. More like suspense thriller than anything.

I tend to be under the impression that the good action movie is one of the hardest types of films to pull off. The best action films develop the action from the script as opposed to writing 6 action scenes and then trying to figure out a storyline to tie them together. Do it right, and you occasionally get a great movie (ie Last of the Mohicans, Aliens, or one of the early Bond films like From Russia, With Love). Do it poorly, and you end up with the majority of the Seagal, Van Damme, Statham, Lundgren, Snipes, etc. films. Most of those above have been involved in the occasional good or very good film---just not very often. Most of the action films around though are designed for the action sequences with script and characterization a distant second--if thought about at all. That's why they tend to get a bad rap.

Action films are popular though, so you end up with an overload of them, and you have to search for the gems buried in the glut of barely average or downright poor ones.

Actually, you would like Hangover. It has a real quirkiness to it, which is rare in these types of comedies anymore. Most just try to go for over-the-top laughs without that dry sense of humor that I like. This had both, plus a quirky oddness to the script.

I keep meaning to rent Hangover b/c the previews look good but I always change my mind when I'm just about to rent it b/c I'm afraid it's gonna be just another lame, "armpit fart" type movie. Is it witty humor or is it stupid humor? To me witty humor is the kind of humor you see in the Naked Gun movies, Meet The Parents or Mrs. Doubtfire. Those movies have subtle & not-so-subtle nuances that tie the plot together. On the other hand, I hated Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle ..... Clerks.... The 40 Year Old Virgin ..... Office Space ..... Wedding Crashers ...... I Love You, Man ..... Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgendy .... & so on & so on & so on. I call those "armpit fart" movies b/c they seem to consist of that juvenile, armpit fart type humor. JMO.

Most Jim Carey movies don't appeal to me, but I have to say that I really liked "Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind" where he wasn't being "Jim Carey"...it's a clever movie with the aesthetics I like.

I didn't care for either Ace Ventura movie ..... Me, Myself & Irene ...... The Cable Guy ...... The Mask ....... Dumb & Dumber ...... or The Truman Show. I did like him in Liar, Liar though. I haven't seen Bruce Almighty but people tell me it's good. Not sure if I want to rent it someday. Jim Carrey has let me down so many times before. Can I find it in my heart to forgive him? IDK......

Dumb and Dumber...That one is a classic....When was the last time you saw it...Try that one again!

That movie NEVER gets old.....best movie ever!!!! LOVE IT!

SO many people say this. I love juvenile comedy, but Hangover wasn't that great to me at all. The best guy in it was the guy from The Office.

Another thing I don't get-
That fat guy in that move, (the one in Out Cold), WHY do people think he's funny? He's not.
Same with Dane Cooke and the guy in that "So and so make a Porno". I HATE that guy and don't think he's funny in the least. Joel somebody??

I can't remember the last time I saw a truly funny movie...

I DID like "I Love You Man". That had some funny stuff in it.

Most Jim Carey movies don't appeal to me, but I have to say that I really liked "Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind" where he wasn't being "Jim Carey"...it's a clever movie with the aesthetics I like.
p.s. I heart RPattz, too.

Eternal Sunshine is movie brilliance.

You could just solve the problem by only watching PORN!!!
