US actor Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will not be returning for a fourth film in the hit Spider-Man franchise, it has been announced.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios said a new film would be released in 2012, but with a new story, director and cast.

The new movie will focus on the superhero's alter-ego, Peter Parker, in high school.

The announcement comes amid reports production on Spider-Man 4 had stalled after script revisions.

"I am so proud of what we accomplished with the Spider-Man franchise over the last decade," Maguire said in a statement.

"Beyond the films themselves, I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."

Raimi, who directed the first three Spider-Man films, added: "Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me."

"While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Sony said it would have more news about the next Spider-Man movie in coming weeks.

"We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots," Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment said.

The first three Spider-Man films - released in 2002, 2004 and 2007 - were box office smashes, earning $2.5bn (£1.6bn) combined worldwide.

I hate when they have to change actors. It's like what happened with batman I guess. Only I like the spiderman movies better than batman. With a change in directors too, it'll probably change everything.

"Like what happened with Batman"? Well, I grew up collecting comics, and along with Daredevil, Spidey and Bats were in my list of tops heroes. While the 2000s saw the best superhero movies ever made — Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, Batman Begins — the BEST overall s'hero film to date is The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan has totally erased the stigma left by the previous 80s/90s Batflicks. (Shit, the second and fourth are two of the WORST s'hero flix ever! )

I think Tobey Maguire is a dick. But he was good for this role. Oh well, another decent franchise going down the shit pipe.

I never said that Batman got worse. I think you misread what I said. I meant things will change with new actors and new directors....like Batman. Never said for better or worse. I really don't like Batman, it's too dark, so I never even saw more than 2 of the movies. I just assume the the way Batman got darker and changed depending on who the director was, that Spiderman will probably change too.

I just hope the new Star Trek crew stays the same Finally saw the new one over the holidays and loved it!

I agree with that part. I really can't stand time travel. It perplexes my brain That director is very much into that though, so I'm sure it will continue. Strangely the movie was still very entertaining for me though. I didn't expect to like it at all.

I don't know, I kind of liked the time travel thing in the new one, and of course now it leaves so much open for follow ups now. Spock talking to himself at the end was great, wasn't it?

I guess I liked it too because it was just way better than the new generation movies and stuff that followed after the "older" crews movies were done being made. I remember my husband and son watching one of the new generation ones on TV not too long ago, and there was a scene with Picard (sp?) and some chick and a waterfall and pixie dust and it looked more like our daughter's "Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure" DVD than a damn STAR TREK movie!

The latest trek was the best of the motion pictures....However, I would have liked to see them stick in 'Q' someplace....he's the coolest character this side of Picard.

Right, you "never said for better or worse," you said "I hate when they have to..." So do I, and in the case of Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire's the biggest casting "win" ever, but after what happened with the last film, I knew Sam and Tobey were done. All I know is if I see something 'tarded like "Robert Pattinson cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man!" I won't go anywhere near the new flick. I'm not expecting another grand slam overhaul like Christopher Nolan has done with Batman. (And kudos to him for choosing to NOT feature Robin in the new films.)

Good riddance, I say. SPIDEY 3 was an INCREDIBLE pile of shit, and the word on the streets about the script for SPIDEY 4 was awful. The Vulture as the main heavy? And Anne Hathaway as "The Vulturess???" Wow- SO glad they went another way.
Toby was fine as Parker, though he turns (I think) 38 this year. Bit of a stretch for him to pull off a college student. And Kirsten Dunst was NEVER right for Mary Jane. Even in the first two films (which I liked) she sorta stunk the joint up in that role.

Ah well...geek rant over.

I like Time Travel, but ST used it a ton already. The best time travel stuff they did was in the old show.

I personally always thought this entire franchise was pretty overrated as far as comic book movies go.

I wasn't a huge comic book buff as a kid, but I always loved Spiderman the character and the cartoons. I was just always underwhelmed by the Maguire movies.

lol, I was wondering what TinkerTrek was. The new Star Trek was a fun watch. Entertaining as hell. I might try it again on my new Blu-Ray player.

lol, I was wondering what TinkerTrek was. The new Star Trek was a fun watch. Entertaining as hell. I might try it again on my new Blu-Ray player.
