Canadian J.D. Fortune will rejoin INXS for gig at Vancouver Olympics

VANCOUVER, B.C. - J.D. Fortune is rejoining INXS for an Olympic bow in his home country.

The Mississauga, Ont., native has posted on his website that he'll be fronting the Aussie rock band when they take the stage at Vancouver's BC Place on Feb. 24.

INXS announced in December that they would release a new album featuring a group of guest singers (including Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas and Brandon Flowers of the Killers) and the Vancouver date would kick off one of the band's "most extensive world tours ever."

Fortune shot to stardom when he won the television reality contest "Rock Star: INXS" in 2005 and became the new frontman for the band. A song he wrote on the show called "Pretty Vegas" became a popular single off the band's subsequent album, "Switch," reaching No. 1 on the charts in Canada.

But following the "Switch" tour, Fortune says the band unceremoniously dumped him at a Hong Kong airport, leaving him to live out of a truck. The band has since disputed the story.

INXS had a string of hits in the 1980s and '90s, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside" and "Never Tear Us Apart." In 1997 the band's charismatic lead singer, Michael Hutchence, hanged himself in a hotel room.

Since then, the group has had a series of lead singers, including Terence Trent D'Arby and Jon Stevens.

I was really into that show but I wasn't rooting for JD - I thought Jordis Unga and Mig Ayesa rocked! Anyone else buy "Rockstar: A Night at the Mayan Theatre"?

I thought they were both good, but I also thought JD was the best 'fit'. For me though - no-one replaces Michael or can sing his songs :( . But I did like the Switch album with the new songs sung by JD.

Just kinda weird how they supposedly 'dumped him off at the airport' (which they denied) and now they want him back? I guess they need a singer if they're planning a tour.

I really enjoyed the show as well, I thought JD was the best fit for the band, and was really hoping to hear him on their next album. I really like "Switch", it was a pretty good album.

That's true, I agree.

I think I read him mentioning his drug abusing led to his departure, and maybe that he was blowing all his money on it. Really stupid thing to do if it's true.

Hopefully it's official he's back full time and where does this put the album they were going to do with various singers?

There's an idea for Journey. Do an album with a bunch of well known singers. I kind of like that idea. Sure better than covering other artists work, which some have suggested.

Journey has a singer...

Glad JD is back with them. Thought he was a good fit. Hope he gets his sh*t together.

Here is the article I'd read before:

The winner of the 2005 reality show Rock Star:INXS has been fired by the band, leaving him broke and living out of his pickup truck. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fortune let the cameras see how desperate his life has become ever since INXS told him he would no longer be the band’s singer at a Hong Kong airport.

“I found myself really alone because I had travelled with these guys for 23 months,” Fortune said. “Some of the audiences we played for were upwards of 80,000 people.” His addiction to cocaine was the possible reason he was let go from INXS, but Fortune claims that he used drugs to cope with the inevitable split, saying that his cocaine use “got as bad as it needed to be for me to numb out the fact that [he] knew this was going to come to a screeching halt.”

Even Fortune’s family was not aware that he was penniless and living in his car until the ET interview aired, but now that he is clean and sober, Fortune is willing to let the public see what’s become of his life so that he can promote his self-released forthcoming album, The Death of a Motivational Speaker.

It left me wondering if he was telling the truth, or just amping up the drama to drum up attention for his solo project, especially since the band seemed to deny his side of the story. Either way, I hope he's back full time -- loved their album together, and thought he was a great fit.

Thanks for posting this, Hutch. I haven't seen it till now. It would be nice if JD is back for good. He had a rough couple years there, but I wish him well & hope he's finally getting his life together.

I dunno - I also wonder if the new album will be new songs, or re-dos? Sounds like at least one is a re-do - Rob Thomas singing Never Tear Us Apart. Not sure I like that idea, I'd rather hear more new songs. Andrew's a fabulous writer, just needs someone like Hutch to collaborate with.

I'll wait and see what it is and more importantly how it turns out before jumping to the conclusion that the entire album is rerecords based on a rumor that 1 song may be a rerecord.

Brandon Flowers re-recorded "Beautiful Girl" with them....unless they're going the Wal-MArt route with an album of new songs and an album of unnecessary re-records.

They already did an album like that...Generations. The singers were just from the band LOL.

JD performing live with INXS tonight from BC Place, on (Canada) Much Music at 8:00 pm. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all pans out after the dramatic split.

Agreed.
And for the next record, take the shackles off of Timmy Farris that were on him for Switch. Dude's axe needs to be heard.

Couldn't watch but a few clips, but I DVR'd the whole thing - from what I did see they sounded pretty tight (but personally I prefer to listen to, rather than watch JD). This Olympics concert series this week has been a dream for me - Loverboy on Sunday (they were fantastic), INXS last night, and my fav Burton Cummings tonight.

Finally got a chance to watch my entire recording today. JD looks and sounds great, band was on as usual. I gotta admit (being a die-hard Hutchaholic :) ) this is the first time I've been able to watch an entire show with JD fronting and thoroughly enjoy it. Sure hope they use him in some capacity for the new album.
