 How can someone that isn't even a household name be an icon? Steve Perry is an icon ... Lou Gramm and Freddie Mercury are icons. Soto is lifetime journeyman that's been under the landscape's radar his entire career and no amount of cheerleading can change that. But W.E.T. is a surprisingly good album and miles ahead of his prior release.

Dude, lol, check yourself. Lou Gram is not an icon. Perry isn't even an icon. Perhaps Freddie is but the other two are nowhere near close to icon status. Come on now. I know you will disagree with me here, but Mick is an icon. Elvis is an icon. Bruce is an icon. McCartney is an icon. There is a huge lot of space between the guys I mentioned and Perry and Gramm. Don't get me wrong, Perry may have been one of the greats, but that doesn't translate into icon status.

I can pretty much agree here. But I think history, and the fact that there's really no one out there that can sing like Perry and Gramm did, will ultimately grant them "icon" status.

I have to agree with you. Perry went off the scene too long ago and never stayed in it. He is not on the tip of people's tongue like Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Mick Jagger, McCartney. These guys have kept going strong and are household names. Elvis definitely iconic.

Yet you were trying to tell me the other day a new Perry solo album would sell all kinds of albums just because of who he is? I understand there's a gap between icon and household name, to be sure, but I don't think you're being 100% accurate.

I don't think Perry's anything close to an icon or even a household name.

You would be correct on that last line. I was saying Perry can outsell Journey. Let's face it, they aren't icon status either. People know that "the original singer guy with the killer voice" is no longer with them, and you have to admit that kills them in sales and recognition. So my point the other day was Perry v Journey(now there's a fresh new argument   ) and today I am arguing against Dan that Perry is nowhere close to icon status.

Fair enough. I think the Journey brand name has gotten quite a bit of traction in recent years, but that's neither here nor there in this thread. Carry on.

You guys are mislabling the scale - Perry and Gramm are icons. Elvis, Sinatra and Don Dokken are "gods". It's a whole nother level. :)
