British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has expressed interest in buying the Abbey Road recording studios following reports its future is under threat.

Lord Lloyd-Webber, his spokesman said, is "very interested" in buying the historic London studios should record giant EMI put them up for sale.

"He thinks it is vital that the studios are saved for the future of the music industry in the UK," he continued.

Most of Lloyd Webber's musicals have been recorded at Abbey Road.

They include the classic Jesus Christ Superstar and Love Never Dies, his upcoming sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.

"Abbey Road has such great facilities, with three major recording studios," Lloyd Webber's spokesman went on.

"Andrew has probably brought more musicians to record there than anyone else, because it has the capacity to record large orchestral productions."

The 61-year-old is one of several celebrities to have expressed concern over Abbey Road, famed for its association with the Beatles and many other artists.

Sir Paul McCartney and DJ Chris Evans are among those to have called for the studios to be preserved.

The National Trust is also considering whether it should launch a campaign to buy the north London complex.

Around 8,000 people have joined a Facebook campaign and online petition urging Abbey Road to be maintained as a working studio.
