Possible Deadly Accident at Sea World

Breaking news, but a trainer was in the tank with a whale in the underwater viewing tank. The whale took off and shot back up and grabbed the female trainer by the waist in his mouth and started thrashing around with her, and a witness saw her shoe fly off. Right now they are tending to the trainer and no word if she's dead or alive. But some sources say she's dead, but they don't have a confirmed statement that she is.

I'm on Channel 6/CBS. They're talking to a witness who was there to view the underwater tanks and whales. There was a trainer by the tank but out of the water, and a trainer outside the tank talking to the people watching and she saw the whole thing. So sad.

They've had troubles with this particular whale b/f. No trainers are allowed in the water with this particular whale. So she jumped up and grabbed her off a rock by the viewing area is what this witness is saying.

Gunny didn't say the workers are animal abuser. He is right about the unnatural world they create for the animals. Like he said they get tired of it and sometimes it ends in a tragic way. It makes a lot of people hate the animal and blame the animal.

Somebody will. It's like those circus elephants that go on rampages and end up having to be killed. I'm cool with having Zoos for Animals that are on the verge of extinction but when it comes to performing animals, I don't care for it. My own opinion of course.

They're saying the reason trainers aren't allowed in the water with him isn't b/c he's aggressive, that the whale is docile, but that it is huge and doesn't know its own strength. Of course, this is just info being fed in to the anchors as they fill time. If that were true, though, could he have been playing?

It reminds me of Roy Horn being "attacked" by the tiger... the whole time he was saying "don't put him (the tiger) down, it isn't his fault..." and he was right. Animals are unpredictable. You have animals that are not meant to be captive, even if they are born in captivity. If their instinct for survival kicks in, all bets are off.

With Montecore (Roy's tiger), it is said that the animal thought that it was Roy who was in some type of danger and he was trying to intervene. Dunno if that's true or can ever be proven, but the fact remains, that animals behave whatever way do based on their perseption of what's going on around them, and we have no way of knowing what is setting them off (their own survival instinct, or as in the case with Montecore, protection).

Growing up I had a dog that was NOT a harmful animal, but one time, he thought my mother was in danger becuase he didn't know the person that iwas in the house (parents' friend) and he almost took the guy's arm off. And it would not have been his fault. No one was hurt, thankfully, but the point is, that was not something we ever thought that dog would do.

This is part of the young whale's biological training, the way kittens will pounce around with mice or small insects. it's hardwired into them, it's skills they'll need use later in life to survive on their own.
Maybe the whale was just playing with the handler with no malice intended? Who knows, it's not like the whale is going to be able to tell us.

Including today, there have been 22 incidents since the early 70s involving whales at SeaWorld.

In July 1999 at SeaWorld Orlando, Orange County sheriff's office say a man climbed into the Tillikum tank and was killed.

In November 2006 at SeaWorld San Diego, an orca whale pulled 39-year-old trainer Ken Peters below the surface by his foot. Peters eventually managed to safely exit the pool.

In July of 2004 at SeaWorld San Antonio, trainer Steve Aibel was attacked for several minutes during a show. Amazingly he was not hurt."

The sheriff's office is saying the trainer slipped or fell in, but that an investigation is ongoing. Then a reporter said, fell in or the whale jumped up? He said they didn't know and why an investigation was ongoing.
