On June 13, 2010, there will be an interesting planetary alignment with Jupiter, Uranus, and Mercury lined up on one side of the Sun, Venus, Mars, and Saturn lined up on the other, and Earth will be perpendicular to the Sun. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. As for 2012, if we're lucky the Mayan calendar ends because the aliens who gave it to them in the first place are bringing the next edition. Beam Me Up, Scotty, these humans are turning the planet into an orbiting garbage dump. :?

Earthquakes happening a lot lately, perhaps the dreaded "Polar Shift" would occur plunging us all into the bottom of the ocean.

2012 is just the "end of an age" on the Mayan Calendar. Nobody seemed to give a shit in 1998.

Because in 1998 we were too busy stocking up on water and preparing for the Y2K and then in 2008 the Y2K+10 ...
now we can concentrate on the end of the world because after that we have to start worrying about Y2K38!!

Is that when the next big asteroid pays us a visit?

I think I did buy some extra Coke and Doritos before Y2K, too. :)

Oh goodness, not another thread on this issue  Here's yet another article on the madness for you all to debate about...

Expecting Armageddon?
The truth about 2012

From Y2K catastrophes to the coming of the rapture in 2001 to a 2007 nuclear war, it seems like every year there is a different prediction for the end of existence. And yet, here we are, long past these previously predicted Doomsday scenarios, nearing 2010 and alive to talk about it. With that in mind, let's relax and have a look at the next milestone on our Armageddon radar. Though we all know it's the subject of a new movie being released today, what exactly is so special about the year 2012?

The madness (and genius) of Mayans
We like to think of ourselves as the pinnacle of human existence and ingenuity, but don't discredit our "primitive" predecessors. Ancient Mayans could add without calculators - and predict planetary transits! Enjoying over 2,000 years of dominance in parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras before Spanish conquest in the 16th Century, they built pyramids, did complicated mathematics and were masters of astronomy. And unlike Galileo, they didn't even have to cheat by using a telescope!

So where does the 2012 prophecy come from? Well, whereas we understand time as a linear experience, the Mayans believed that it was cyclical. They had two major calendars that worked in conjunction with one another -- the Tzolk'in and the Haab'. Used to determine religious dates and ceremonies, The Tzolk'in calendar was 260 days in length. The less detailed Haab' calendar was used solely to keep track of the seasons. Neither Mayan calendar had set dates or years attached to them, so in order to determine specific times in the past or future, they used another system altogether. And it is there, with "Long Count" where the 2012 tale was borne.

12/21/2012
According to scholars, the beginning of the Long Count calendar (translated into our calendar terms) was August 11, 3114 BCE. Since an entire cycle of the Long Count is said to take 5,126 years to complete, the first cycle would be set to end on December 21, 2012. Many believe that since the Mayan calendar ends there, that this date is the date of the end of the world. But contrary to popular belief, the Mayans did have dates further in the future! Additionally, they perceived a passing of an entire cycle as a great accomplishment and time of rejoicing. Translation: there is no recorded prophesy saying definitively that they believed the world was going to end.

Inter-galactic controversy
Finally, there is no questioning that December 21, 2012 is (in astronomical terms), a very significant date. Why? It will be the first time in roughly 26,000 years that the Sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Hence, there is scientific inspiration for the on-going debate. That said, rather than worrying about doomsday and the end of the world, it makes more sense to think about a shift in consciousness. A whole school of scholars and New Age experts have begun embracing the idea of 2012 as a chance for rebirth. In fact, as humans reconnect with the Earth (in much the same manner as the ancient Earth religions did), we can already see this sort of change occurring -- from the popularity of going green to increasing global consciousness.

Finally, if you can't get your mind around the hooplah surrounding our impending destruction in 2012, take a deep breath. Nostradamus didn't think the world would end until 3797.

You don't get one you athiest!  I think it's funny how they've pulled God out of all of our school textbooks and courtrooms (well, not all of them, but give the ACLU a little longer!), and cracked down on students organizing for prayers, yet inmates can pray and read the Bible in prison. Does that not seem odd to anyone else here?

Sorry, I'm definitely not aiming this at you. It just urks me every time I see BCE. Our parents, Grand parents, and Great Grand parents grew up in this country as God fearing people, and you know what? There wasn't much crime back then. When I grew up in Canada (not THAT long ago), we never locked our house OR our car. We were safe. NOW? If you set your keys down to tie your shoe... There goes your car!

I know this is a free country and we're so afraid of hurting someone's feelings, but this country has become so screwed up that it's pathetic. It gets worse every day with teen violence, drug use, rapes, murders, thefts, etc... It's not getting better. If you want to see some interesting stats, google crime rates, unwed pregnancies, etc before the 60's, then google after. You'll be shocked.

I can't recall the exact year, but one year in the 60's, high school textbooks raised the amount of words about evolution from about 1000 words, to over 10000, and the teachers were taught to STRESS evolution, and that the Earth was billions of years old. It was the early 60's. You know what that says? If you tell kids they evolved from an ape, they start acting like them. Just saying.

I'm not trying to convert anyone here to my beliefs, as I'm just as big of a sinner as anyone here. It's up to each of us to find our own path. I just think it's obvious what has happened to change this country into the "shock and awe" nation that it's become. Hell, last night I was flipping through channels on Dish Network and saw some kind of alien movie on. After watching for no more than 15 seconds, they flip to a full-on lesbian sex scene with no clothes on, full exposure to include licking eachother and masturbating eachother, and they left nothing out or sensored (I'm dead serious!!!), and this was on one of the regular Max channels. NOT the porn channels. WTH is WRONG with this country? What if that were my 13 year old son flipping through the channels???

Sorry, that's just my $2,02 worth.

Your not alone on that thinking. I respect everyones rights to beleive what they want. I just wished my rights were just as equally respected. I see students loosing respect for authority every day. There is no such thing as respecting elders, or common courtesy amoungst younger children as it used to be. I would never say the things students have said to me and other teachers at my school years ago. Regardless of faith, or not, common decency should not fly out the window when it comes to our young people. They are so jaded by the time they graduate it is sad. :(

Did you watch any of those shows??? They never said the world would end.... they all had the same message,,, that some drastic change COULD happen , something that will affect mainly our time measuring system,,, not the hollywood stuff about white house getting wiped out and all oceans break loose,,,,
I think if anything , some extremely strong earthquake will slightly set earth out of its course, so it will screw up all our seconds/minutes/hours/days/weeks/months measuring ,,,

Not at all. The last refuge for a dying man [ or those without hope] is God.

Has nothing to do with God. Has to everything to do with too many people.

The church stealing money from old people, Clergyman raping little kids, going to war in the name of God, "My religion can beat up your religion", etc.
Religion hasn't worked for humans. Time to abandon it.

There are too many people and man refuses to evolve and embrace peace. As long as there are humans, you'll have crime, war, etc. Has nothing to do with God.

They show the same thing on any MTV reality series.

Not saying there's no God, by the way. I'm saying that "Religion" is not a good thing for anyone. Another organization to keep people in line and others out and to push their own agenda. People need to stop believing in religion and believe in God.

Just my 2 cents.
