Two songs. At Christmas I was in Wal-Mart and bought some CDs in the three to five dollar bin of greatest hits. One was America. I forgot about it and just played it the other day. The CD doesn't say remastered on it, but the sound is flat-out amazing. I love every song on there, beautiful harmonies, but these two well-known hits keep playing in my head. I never realized all the great music they wrote, and I didn't realize all three guys sang lead on different songs.

After falling in love with the CD I went and looked at songs on YouTube and saw their new album Here and Now. I'm gong to buy it. But who is missing from the trio?

He sings on a few of the big tunes, like Don't Cross The River and Lonely People, but Gerry and Dewey take vocals on those tunes very well these days live. No egos in this band... the third guitarist (Mike "Woodsie" Woods) and the drummer (Willie Leacox) have both been with the band for over 31 years.

I believe Peek left because of creative differences. I don't know much of the back story, but I think he went Christian. I don't think there's tons of animosity between the parties or anything like that.

On the CD, there were songs like Only in Your Heart and Daisy Jane and Amber Cascades that I didn't know and were fantastic. The sound on this Wal-Mart GH CD in my car is far better than some newer CDs. Go figure. I see on YouTube they do still do a lot of shows and sound great still. It appears Gerry is the main songwriter.

I don't know how the writing credits break down, but Gerry does seem to write more. He also does solo albums (which are REALLY good btw, if you like Gerry's songs in America). But, Dewey definitely has a lot of songs on every album. And yes, they sound 100% great still. I've seen them once every year since 2000 besides last year when they didn't make it near me. They are in great shape and I think that really pays dividends for their performance.

They have SEVERAL great live dvds too... I recommend the Live at the Sydney Opera House DVD. The recent Soundstage is good too, though.

And finally, yes, their production has always been great. The great George Martin (Beatles) produced several of their albums in the 70s. But, they've always sounded great. Nice, crisp, clean sound throughout their discography.

I read they did remain friends and sang backup on his Christian album once, but interesting re a reunion in Wikipedia:

"The questions about a possible reunion of the original trio began not long after Peek left the group. When asked about the prospects for a reunion in the early 1980s, Beckley and Bunnell stated that they were happy for Peek in that he had found a new life and a new direction, but that it was unlikely there would be a reunion. "All things are possible, like [Dan] says", Beckley told radio host Lew Irwin in 1982, but "it just doesn't seem in the cards." Within a few years, however, Peek had begun to entertain just such thoughts publicly. "Like they said and like I said, all things are possible", Peek told interviewer Steve Orchard in 1985. "I really have my fingers crossed. I would love to get back together [with them] and do some things."

Although Beckley and Bunnell have over the years become increasingly firm in their position that a reunion with Peek is unlikely, and could in fact be counterproductive, record companies have tried to persuade the duo to change their minds. Bunnell noted to Steve Orchard in 1998 that "[w]e had a few labels say that they would be interested in recording us if we would bring Dan back or if we could put together the original trio." Beckley and Bunnell have chosen to maintain their decision to remain a duo."

Heh heh heh - I'm one of those evil people who, if you tell me your leg has gone to sleep, I am compelled to poke it.

My ex used to tell me all time when he got a song stuck in his head. I'd always say 'you know I have a way to fix that' and then start humming 'The Girl From Ipanema'. Then about five minutes later, I'd start humming 'Popcorn'. Then Plastic Bertrand's 'Ca Plane Pour Moi'. Then 'The Spanish Flea'... and so on. I'd keep sticking another earworm in his head about every five minutes, generally for about half an hour. There is one 8 hour drive to Melbourne that he still refers to as 'Earworm Hell' (he still swears if you mention Aqua's 'Dr Jones'.)



Come to think of it, had lunch with him a week ago, and he's still dumb enough to tell me. You'd think after 7 years he'd have learned his lesson.
