Songs you like that have a cover version that appeals to you also. The more original the cover version, the better.

The Original

Ashes to Ashes - a David Bowie song covered by Roland Orzabal for a tribute covers album, I think, by artists of David Bowie, so stayed true to his version. I like it better than Bowie's b/c Roland's voice is better -

David Bowie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyMm4rJemtI
Roland Orzabal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6qlM49b5Uc

Mad World - Two covers. Gary Jules did a slow, haunting version for Donnie Darko and it became a hit and then, of course, Adam Lambert stayed more true to that version than the original which was a New Wave sound originally and faster-paced. Adam Lambert's is stunning.

My favorite and most powerful cover of all time. Johnny Cash covering the Nine Inch Nails song - Hurt:

Trent Reznor's commentary on his reaction to Johnny's cover of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlzjqPGdOSM

Not sure which one I prefer. Think the Raspberries one is better

That was the obvious choice and I was tempted to use it but I know more people have heard that version so I wanted to post something more obscure and with a little bit of a tie in, being Michael's former bandmate, Andrew Ridgeley of Wham is married to Keren Woodward of Bananarama.

a couple here....

Word Up...
Cameo (original) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w39Z5nmFmqo
Gun (seriously rocked up cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uufUktrTCTg

Downtown Train
Tom Waits (another singer who challenges Dylan for not being able to sing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzfCu3pvE1A
Rod Stewart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ffj6hKN2n0

You Can't Hurry Love
The Supremes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZVRwHrCTp8
Phil Collins http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYC5E4perb8
The Phil Collins version may be the closest to a true cover ever recorded. He was very insistent in copying the exact sounds of the instruments down to the sounds of the drums so that the vocal is the only different part. Apparently, the drum skins had to be so loose as to almost fall off to duplicate the original sound.

River Deep, Mountain High
Tina & Ike Turner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULw1RHHPv5g
Jimmy Barnes (typical Barnes highly rocked-up version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R39Z7QrnyiA

Sweet Soul Music
Sam Cooke (original unfinished, unreleased at the time version called "Yeah Man") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9hjmLPq6Zw
Arthur Conley (re-written into the familiar song after Cooke's death) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE61gCVht4Y

Shake Rattle & Roll
Big Joe Turner (original, rarely heard version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20Feq_Nt3nM
Bill Haley (VERY sanitized lyrical version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpT8Sd9wRlQ

Gimme Some Lovin
Spencer Davis Group http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Wvxg-hV-0
Thunder (live version from the great, sadly recently-disbanded UK hard rock band) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU2AzdaqQ1Y

I've never heard of him, but this is a fantastic cover of the Deep Purple song "Mistreated" by Voodoo I found recently. Of course, there's some really great covers of this song by other bands.

It is. It definitely takes your breath away. I forgot to post the original, which is New Wave/Synth Pop. After Gary Jules' rendition was rearranged and slowed down and became a hit, Roland Orzabal, who wrote the song, said the new version was much better. But I still love the fast synth sound for back in the early 80s.

Original - David Bowie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSnXjE66tvQ

Cover - Jordis Unga - http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=2zsNdGf ... re=related

I like both versions but I thought Unga's voice really enhanced the song.
