The King of the Wild Frontier is gone.

Fess Parker, the strapping star who played Davy Crockett in the hugely popular Disney television show of the 1950s, died today of natural causes at age 85, his family announced.

The actor, whose classic roles also included the son-consoling dad in Old Yeller and another 'coonskin-cap-favoring frontiersman in NBC's Daniel Boone, had retired from showbiz in the 1970s and founded a hugely successful winery and resort in Santa Barbara.

He was 85.

I've got the special edition DVD tin from Disney. I remember watching at my Grandparents house as my my dad was in Vietnam so we were living with them until he came home. Fess was my Idol with his coonskin cap and his rifle, Betsy.

Now that I think about it, I remember him more from Daniel Boone (I'm old but not quite old enough to have watched Davy Crockett in the 50's  ). And of course - Old Yeller - I've probably watched that movie 50 times and still cry over the damn dog every time!
