Christina Aguilera Video 'Not Myself Tonight' - Too Far?

PostPosted: Thu May 06, 2010 6:21 pm

Christina Aguilera recently released Not Myself Tonight and I think the video crosses the line. Music videos are still aimed primarily at teenagers and this is just nasty. I'll put in a link, but even for the clean version of the song, the video has content that requires you to be 18 and have an account to see it. I understand pushing the envelope, but this is going too far considering the primary buying audience is under 18.

Not Myself Tonight: http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A//www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dwt-tHcQR67Y

Edit: There were a lot of comments online about CA trying to be Lady Gaga, so I checked out some of LG's videos.
Holy freakin' crap, I'm glad I don't have kids who are growing up with this stuff. This must be one of the toughest eras for raising children considering what they are exposed to!

Wow. I don't understand some singers having to go for "the shock factor" with their videos. I'm pushing 40 so maybe I'm on the other side of the spectrum now. I used to think some of the things my parents may have found too much were nothing but now I think they WERE nothing compared to performers these days. I watched this video until she grabbed her crotch 53 seconds into it. I'm open minded and by no means a prude but I just really don't want to see that.

Nothing too shocking....It's no worse than Madonna's Justify My Love video.

Oh well, that's just the way it is now. Every generation pushes the envelope.

Elvis had to be shown on TV from the waist up because his moves were considered offensive. Parents back then view that the same way
today's parents view this.

Like it or not, it's the evolution of entertainment.

Exactly! For our era/parents, it was more like Alice Cooper, Ozzy, etc. :o I had to laugh when my daughter saw an old classic Led Zepplin video, and was like "holy crap are his jeans tight  " at Robert Plant. I LMAO and said it beats your generation's jeans that the crotch hangs down to the knees and are belted under the ass, underwear totally hanging out......

Key difference being most of those bands had talent to back up the shock... yes, even Madonna. ANY of the controversial performers of yesteryear have more talent in their pinkies than these clowns do today.

Christina isn't aimed at teens. She's 29 now and her last CD was definitely adult. All of these are just rip-offs of Madonna, no new ground, and people were in an uproar over Madonna many moons ago. Parents let their kids and teens see very violent movies and sexual content. Kids see the trashy reality shows all the time that are disgusting with promiscuity on and on. Christiina is a great talent. She doesn't need this b/c to me it looks like a Madonna deja vu video. My parents said the same thing regarding their generation being more moral compared to the music and bands and acts I grew up on. It is what it is. With the internet kids are seeing way more than any parent knows anyway.

Funny. Josh Groban can just go out there, no dancing, a little piano playing, belt out his tunes and still make platinum without the benefit of music videos.

True talent usually prevails in the end.The Britneys and Aguileras will have that sudden burst for a few years and then disappear until their next eruption. Artists like Groban, Sarah Brightman and others keep rolling along in the backround, collecting international awards and quietly selling out everywhere they go.

Christina has more talent in her pinky than most singers will ever have. I've seen her perform all types of songs. Here she is with Andrea Bocelli.

^^^this is true, but Aguilera has got the voice of a very seriously, soulful black woman/angel combination!!
I love her voice, although; I could do without the Mariahbatics she uses on occasion ...she does not need *shock* value?!?! :?

Her last CD Back to Basic, great album, very mature. She is someone who explores different styles of music and her voice.

A perfect example:

Does she even write her own songs? All the talent in the world is for naught if you don't write in my book - that's why Elvis gets too much respect imo.

It's like a great natural talent in athletics that doesn't have the mind to compete - only half of the puzzle is there.

Yes, she writes. When she was young and they were trying to keep her in a box and push certain types of canned hits like her previous CD, she fought hard for what she wanted and what she wanted to write even if it wasn't going to get her the big hit. Her second album Stripped, she co-wrote if not all the songs, most of the songs.

Her albums are comprised of mostly her own self/co-written songs then? More power to her then. Her music still sucks a fat black dick btw 8)

Here is a song from Stripped, written about her bad childhood regarding her father:

I think this is one of her most powerful songs, dark but hauntingly beautiful lyrics and vocals:

There is pushing the envelope, but the visuals in this video went beyond that and what is with that ball strapped into her mouth? :? But this really isn't pushing the envelope if it's just a ripoff of Lady Gaga (more crap) and it sucks to boot. If this is the direction music videos are going, what is next? That is what worries me!

CA may be 29, but it's going to be teenagers to 30 buying her music. Rick Springfield was 32 when Jessie's Girl came out in '81 and 35 when he did that movie Hard to Hold - they had to edit out scenes to bring the rating down to PG since most of his fans were 12-15 (like me  ).

Music videos are going to die out soon, I don't think they hold much influence. Practically no one in my generation and younger watches them (I still do). Maybe once on YouTube and that's about it... and the only tv channels playing videos now are a couple of deep cable ones.

For the record, Lady Gaga's got some great pipes as does Christina. I'm not a fan of Gaga music in general but she most definitely can sing.

Talent is subjective....Christina has some serious pipes...Now, I'm not a fan, but I respect her voice as one of the best to have come out in that style of music in the past 10 years.

There were plenty of 80's bands that had low talent but have platinum records on their walls for their efforts.

Not disagreeing with you, but just posting my .02 opinions.

Despite Britney's recent meltdown, she's not going anywhere anytime soon...Much to the dismay of many, I believe she'll be around for quite awhile.

I was just curious as to why you feel this way -- I don't disagree about Christina (I would prefer her doing something different stylistically with her voice, but hey it's her career) -- I mean do you have anything for Lady Gaga that doesn't have auto-tune fx or any over-powering fx on it? I'm not trying to debate I just want to hear where you're coming from, that's all.
