This is just amazing...I got this in my email - check out the stats at the end

"I find it amazing that this photo, taken so many years ago, actually still exists! And now, someone has put it online for all of us to see. This INCREDIBLE picture was taken in 1918.

It is 18,000 men preparing for war in a training camp at Camp Dodge in Iowa .

Torch and flame combined: 980 feet
Number of men in flame of torch: 12,000
Number of men in torch: 2,800
Number of men in right arm: 1,200 Number of men in body, head and balance of figure only: 2,000

Wow... amazing!

It's particularly hard to imagine since there were no cell phones to communicate between people or digital cameras to see if everyone was in place. This is spectacular!

Great find, Nora! That's a fantastic photo! They even have different color shirts on to show the folds in the robe, etc... which gives dimension to the picture. Cool!

Real men don't need no fucking cell-phones.

Well if this photo is genuine, they most likely did it by first drawing the image out on the ground and then filling it in with people, so they wouldn't need any cell phone communications in order to accomplish it. Just have everyone fall in and take the picture.

Drawing it on the ground wouldn't have been so easy though since it appears the photo was taken at an angle, the image would have had to be much larger at the other end for it to be in proportion to the end closest to the camera, in order for it to look right at that angle.

But then again, photoshop is a wonderful thing.

Well I did a little investigating and supposedly that picture is authentic, though I'm really disappointed I couldn't find any information of great details discussing the way they did this picture.

Yep, it's all about timing and formation in a marching band. You get your instructions through word of mouth and/or the beats from the band.

Oh good, cause Im always a skeptic of these internet pictures too I agree with MG though. And my whole class spelled out a big "86" on the football field for our senior yearbook with our standing bodies and it worked great We even had people laying down for the quotation marks. With a lot of planning, patience, and work it could be done.

It's a simple eight count, like dance, cheering anything of that sort ...no word of mouth ~zero~none~zilch !!

Yep, counting in your head really. We marched without music to practice formations. It's about counting.

I zoomed in and counted it 3 times and I came up with 17998 every time ....

I played drums in our high school band. We started one half-time show as one of the aliens from Space Invaders (yeah, it was the 80s), and marched it from the endzone to midfield.

That's possibly one of the coolest orchestrated photos I've ever seen. Awesome stuff right there.. wonder how long it took them do this compared to the normal man since soldiers were always strict to order, esp back in those days of war.

You should recount the people in the satellite images of the Million Man March? From what I understand, they were short about 600,000 people. You may be able to help them out and get that number closer to what they thought they had with a recount.

You should recount the people in the satellite images of the Million Man March? From what I understand, they were short about 600,000 people. You may be able to help them out and get that number closer to what they thought they had with a recount.

See you missed out! Should have joined band and then you would have had those long bus rides after the away games in the dark after friday night football games I was on the danceline, so we didn't get to ride on the co-ed bus Us and the flagline were stuck on our own bus.

Nah... I was too busy trying to be a rock star during high school! I really used the fact that I played keyboards as an outlet to hook up with the ladies. I played in several garage bands from the age of 15 on, and girls LOVE a musician. I'm ashamed looking back now, because I was such a dog.

There was a cheeleader I hooked up with during high school, and I broke her heart. I went back home about 4 years ago for a visit (Some 15 years later), and I saw her working in a liquor store. When I went to check out, she just walked away and made the other guy there ring me up! I was with a buddy of mine and he was like "Damn dude... what did you DO to that girl???".
