I don't believe I'm actually going through a mid-life crisis, but who knows... maybe I really am! I miss a LOT of things from the 80's, but I think the biggest thing that has affected my life is the loss of my three best friends from high school during that time. I lost one to a car wreck, one to a motorcycle wreck (while on his way to my house), and one to cancer (I was the last one to see him alive besides his mother). This all happened within a year, from 1987 to 1988.

not trying to get depressing here, but I really think that's why I'm so tied to the 80's. The music, the movies, etc... Every time I hear a new song that sounds "80's" it takes me back to that time. The whole experience of MTV, girlfriends, chasing booty, drinking, etc... it ALL started during that time for me.

As I've said... My favorite things from the 80's were John Hughes movies, John Candy movies, The Lost Boys, Hellraiser, etc... So what are some of your favorite memories from that era?

Sorry for the previous post, but I talked to a good friend from High School tonight for the first time in a long time, and I think it just brought back memories. I'll shut up now.

That's one hell of a raw deal with your friends - sorry to hear about that. I "lost" one of my two best friends from 4th grade through college just this past winter... the fucker just went totally AWOL on me for no reason and does not take my calls, texts, e-mails, or Facebook messages. I honestly have no idea why. He made some poor choices in his life in the last year, but nothing ridiculously life destroying like committing a serious crime or declaring bankruptcy. We didn't have one falling out over anything at all. He just up and stopped talking to me back in November and won't be a man and explain himself even when I've reached out a few times over the last 7 months either via the iNternet or phone. Oh well, fuck him. Cleveland's a small town and I'll run into him by fluke... and he'll get his ass beat At least he didn't die, that'd be worse. At least we can drink beers and hit concerts again if he ever comes around.

I was just kidding, Jim but it gave you a topic, anyway. Sorry about the loss of your friends....they obviously still live, though, in your heart. My Favorite 80's memories are when I was blessed with my sons. I had my twin sons when I was 22 and my other son when I was 23. They are the best gifts I've ever gotten along with my granddaughter over a year ago.

Yes, I am. Yep, I'm 50 but I don't pay attention to the number, I go with how I feel and I just don't feel old......yet. I have my health, no aches or pains and am very active. When I was putting my kayak back on my Jeep a woman stopped and asked me questions about kayaking.....she said it looked like fun and she was thinking about taking it up........she's 70. Quite a beautiful woman too...lovely face, hair and in fantastic shape physically. At the start of the conversation I had said that maybe I was getting too old to be doing such a physical activity......and she called me a youngster. . haha!......well, that and her deciding to take up kayaking at her age put things in perspective for me. My Grandfather, who passed away at 96 was very active up to two weeks before his death... he also taught me to never let age hold me back and to keep moving, learning new things and always create...as he did with his blacksmithing and woodworking and I do with my artwork.

They were good days Jim, i wish i could go back to. I went through some shit when i turned 40,Nowadays im just happy for what i have,i still got hair, i can still get it up,i got a sweet girlfreind thats ive been with over a year,my daughters not doing drugs anymore, my mom and dad are still alive,and i am healthy. hang in there sarge

don't apologize Jim! That happens to me so I just assumed it happens to everyone I call them nostalgia moments. I have them a lot when something triggers a childhood memory, or my memories from the 80's when I was a teen. Music especially, movies, tv shows, foods from where I grew up... it's almost a comforting feeling to me.

I have netflix and 2 of my kids are 16 and 13 so I've started putting the old nostalgia movies in my que so I can share them with the kids I had them watch Lost Boys last weekend and my 16 year old son, who is usually hard to please because of the bad graphics in the 80's loved it. He was surprised and thought it was a good movie. So I've crossed over that line of sharing nostalgia with my kids! But then I have good memories of my dad doing that with me with his old tv shows and stuff. I watched old twilight zones with him all the time back then. A lot of that was bonding time for me and I lost him when I was in my early 20's. So anyway, I think you're normal! Or neither of us are

Actually... I was laughing when I read his post Parfait! And he's right... I'm not saying I don't like my life now. I don't have an urge to "go back and do something". Hell, I can't think of much I DIDN'T do in the 80's. If you didn't grow up in that era, you'll just never understand. My son sees some of those movies and goes "Dad, you guys dressed retarded back then". He's right, but you wouldn't have thought so at the time.

I just miss friends that aren't around mostly. Theres no cure for that unfortunately. Also, I'm 3000 miles from where I grew up, so I don't just run into people I went to school with. I moved when I got stationed at Ft Jackson here back in 1993, and basically haven't been back since. Everyone I know still hangs out with friends they went to school with, or still talk to neighborhood friends. I don't have that here. I just get a little homesick sometimes.

I think that's part of it for me too Jim. I live 1000 miles from where I grew up and I love when I get to visit. There is just something about that nostalgia feeling.

It's kinda funny for me Jim, as I'm having the opposite experience right now. I moved away a decent distance (although nothing like 3000 miles) for college. I was about 3 hours from home, which is closer to home than many Cleveland kids who stay in Ohio for school are. But, the big difference was, I only knew 1 person from HS who went to my college... so I was FORCED to branch out and make all new friends as opposed to the people I know who went to Ohio State/Dayton/Xavier/Miami OH who all just stayed in the same group. Though I still talked to HS friends here and there, I didn't exactly hang out with them all summer when I was home while I was still an undergrad.

Now, I'm back home, and though I've made some great friends in grad school and at work, I've been hanging out with the same old buddies I've known since kindergarten or the guys I first met freshman year of high school... and I love it.

The other night, my two buddies and I weren't much up for going all the way downtown on a rainy night and blowing $50 on a cab, so we just each grabbed a good 6er each and a case of Miller Lite and played 360 until we got too drunk to see, then we threw on a good concert DVD at about 2 AM. It was just like the "guy's nights" we'd have in HS... and it was a great time!

I think the important part for me is that I've made new friends in different circles in each place I've been, so I've really been able to hold onto the friends from ALL STAGES of my life that were worth holding onto. Other people go all out in one era of their lives (probably either HS or college) and forget about one or the other group of friends. Ultimately, I think that leads to a bit of a friend vacuum. I love my friends from college, but it'll never be the same with them as it is with the buds I have that I've known since I was 6, just as my college experiences with those friends give us something unique to remember and identify with.

Now, going to college isn't the only era divider, as I know not everyone has gone, but that was my experience... but I know that as a general rule, people generally can fall into different social groups and branch out through work or whatever else once people get out of the closed universe that is high school. So, all my points remain about the same.

I wouldn't want to be that far from my old friends like you are, but on the other hand, the grass is always greener when you're getting sick of one group of friends and remembering only the shit you had a good time with when remembering an older/other group of friends.

Just a few thoughts from reading this thread:

The encouragement was nice of you to say....and good that you have that attitude. It is never too late.

There's nothing wrong with being nostalgic and talking about fond memories...but there is a problem IF someone gets stuck in nostalgia and stay dwelling there for a long period of time. Personally I don't want to go back in time, remember and learn from it yes,....the good and the bad, because everything wasn't all rosy in any era....... but I want to live now in the moment and look forward to the next.


Also, I don't agree with the ageism towards you because you are younger. I've learnt things from younger people just as much as I have from older. Do you still have much to learn? Yes, of course you do, but so do we all. There is a problem when people hit their 40's and think, that's it I've had the fun part of my life and it's all downhill from here and I've learned all I need to know and I know more than you. < This is not a healthy attitude....we all can learn something from others regardless of their age, sex , race and/ or culture because we all have walked different paths and had different experiences.

We should never get complacent and assume we know all we need to know and experienced all we need to have experienced. It's impossible for anyone to know everything. Even Einstein was still trying to figure life out on his deathbed. As my gramps said....keep living and learning with every moment you have and be nostalgic when you can show others your roadmap to where you've been and remember those places fondly but see them with clear vision honestly. I say ....look back but don't stay back...look at where you are now and keep moving forward. You have to see where you've been to figure out where your going but if you don't keep your eyes on the road ahead you'll miss your next destination and a lot to see do and learn along the way.

No one is using ageism against him as far as him expressing his opinions, but rather him trying to teach us how to deal with nostalgia. For someone who didnt LIVE the 80s and isnt old enough to understand what nostalgia means, he has NO clue what we are talking about. Even if he reads up on it and learn all about the great things of 80s and watches the movies and listens to the music, he did NOT EXPERIENCE it,,, he has no memories connected to every little thing from the 80s.

We all learn from other people, older or younger,,, but I dont think any of us would really wanna learn from from someone ,about something that WE lived and they didnt.

anyone here that grew up in the 80's remember when iroc-z28 camaros were all the rage in the mid to late 80's? i was a teenager then and them and corvettes were like THE car to have back then.anyway right after september 11th,2001 about six months later was when the economy really got bad.i had some money saved up and i saw where an older gentleman had this car for sale that had been in his garage for years and i had some money saved.the day afterwards the man had the car sitting there displayed outside.i remember me and three other people kept driving by in our cars looking.i finally asked the old guy if i could buy it.he replied whoever has the money first.no way was i letting those three other people buy this car.i already had the money there with me.anyway this thing was my dream car from the 80's and i actually bought it almost new because it had barely been driven'.below is an idea of what the car looked like.i had two kids and in 2005 had to get rid of it and get a minivan.
