I just read the stuff I posted, and it's from 2004. :oops: :lol: But I've never heard that, and I thought it was laughable. No vested interest there is there?

I mean come on! Stairway to Heaven? Free Bird? Even Johnny Be Good is a better song than that one.

Well maybe it was redone. I read the story on Facebook, so I thought I would post it here. Then I figured the people here would require sources, and so I posted two of them, then I read the sources and they were both from 2004, so I thought, OH SHIT! :lol: I'll bet this was discussed on here, way back then. So maybe it is current.

I'll just shut up now. :lol:

Ah - just found another article that says the list was originally compiled in '04, recently updated, and now RS is releasing a special collector's edition where the list will be published.

Rolling Stone? More like Rolling Doobies. That magazine hasn't had any credibility since 1985.

C'mon, best song of ALL TIME :shock: Probably not even best of 1965, but definately not of all time! I think we all could think of about 100 better choices :? I saw some good teasers on the magazine's cover

When I was growing up, the top two songs were always Free Bird and Stairway To Heaven. That seemed to be set in stone, how that changed so drastically, I have no idea.

I don't think it's possible to ever really decide the best rock song of all time, it's way too subjective.

You really can't say best of all time. It's subjective. But, for me, I would have to say Stairway to Heaven is the best rock song of all time. Really a masterpiece.

What Hard Rock act even comes close to Led Zeppelin? This is a band who never took a walk on the pop or A/C side (like Aerosmith, Foreigner, Van Hager, Journey, and even Ozzy) and STILL managed to sell between 200 to 300 million albums.

They are Rock.

I always find it fascinating the writing process of a truly brilliant song. Here's the background on STH:

The song originated in 1970 when Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were spending time at Bron-Yr-Aur, a remote cottage in Wales, following Led Zeppelin's fifth American concert tour. According to Page, he wrote the music "over a long period, the first part coming at Bron-Yr-Aur one night".[6] Page always kept a cassette recorder around, and the idea for "Stairway" came together from bits of taped music:[7]
I had these pieces, these guitar pieces, that I wanted to put together. I had a whole idea of a piece of music that I really wanted to try and present to everybody and try and come to terms with. Bit difficult really, because it started on acoustic, and as you know it goes through to the electric parts. But we had various run-throughs [at Headley Grange] where I was playing the acoustic guitar and jumping up and picking up the electric guitar. Robert was sitting in the corner, or rather leaning against the wall, and as I was routining the rest of the band with this idea and this piece, he was just writing. And all of a sudden he got up and started singing, along with another run-through, and he must have had 80% of the words there ... I had these sections, and I knew what order they were going to go in, but it was just a matter of getting everybody to feel comfortable with each gear shift that was going to be coming.[8]
Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones recalled this presentation of the song to him following its genesis at Bron-Yr-Aur:
Page and Plant would come back from the Welsh mountains with the guitar intro and verse. I literally heard it in front of a roaring fire in a country manor house! I picked up a bass recorder and played a run-down riff which gave us an intro, then I moved into a piano for the next section, dubbing on the guitars

I wish there were a music magazine with some objective insight and credibility. Rolling Stone magazine has its place in history, but it became elitist which is contrary to the spirit of rock music!

Have you seen "It Might Get Loud"? There is some great footage of Page walking around that manor house talking about the song writing and recording that went on there.
