AT&T caps phone data usage with new wireless plans

Postby AlteredDNA » Wed Jun 02, 2010 10:09 pm

Just in time for the new iPhone... ;)

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ATampT-ca ... l?x=0&.v=7

In time for the widely expected launch of a new iPhone model, carrier AT&T Inc. is pulling in the reins on data usage by its customers with smart phones and iPads.

The sole U.S. carrier of the iPhone is introducing two new data plans, starting June 7, with limits on data consumption. They'll replace the $30 per month plan with unlimited usage that it has required for all smart phones, including the iPhone.

With the change AT&T is adopting a carrot-and-stick approach to assuage the data congestion on its network, which has been a source of complaints, especially in cities such as New York and San Francisco that are thick with iPhone users. The new plans will take effect just as Apple is expected to unveil the next generation of its iPhone at an event Monday in San Francisco.

Subscribers who use little data or learn to limit their consumption will pay slightly less every month than they do now, while heavy users will be dinged with extra consumption fees.

One new plan will cost $25 per month and offer 2 gigabytes of data per month, which AT&T says will be enough for 98 percent of its smart phone customers. Additional gigabytes will cost $10 each.

A second plan will cost $15 per month for 200 megabytes of data, which AT&T says is enough for 65 percent of its smart phone customers. If they go over, they'll pay another $15 for 200 megabytes.

With that plan and voice service, a smart phone could cost as little as $55 per month before taxes and add-on fees, down from $70 per month. Ralph de la Vega, the head of AT&T's consumer business, said that means smart phones can become accessible to more people.

"Customers are getting a good deal, and if they can understand their usage, they can save some money," de la Vega said in an interview.

Current AT&T subscribers will be allowed to keep the unlimited plan, even if they renew their contracts. But all new subscribers will have to choose one of the two new plans.

Figuring out which one to choose may not be easy, given that many people have only a hazy notion of the size of a gigabyte and how many they use now. A gigabyte is enough for hundreds of e-mails and Web pages, but it's quickly eaten up by Internet video and videoconferencing.

De la Vega said AT&T is doing its part to educate consumers, by letting them track their usage online. The iPhone contains a data usage tracking tool. The carrier will also text-message subscribers to let them know they're getting close their limits.

Data usage over Wi-Fi, including AT&T's public Wi-Fi hot spots, will not count toward the limits.

The new $25-per-month plan will replace the current $30 plan with unlimited usage that is available for the iPad, the tablet computer Apple Inc. released just a few months ago, though iPad owners can keep the old plan as long as they keep paying $30 per month, AT&T said.

Paradoxically, the data caps arrive at time when carriers have started to lift the limits on other forms of wireless use, by selling plans with unlimited calling and unlimited text messaging. That's not a big gamble, because not many people have the time to talk phone for eight hours a day or spend every waking minute sending text messages. But smart phones can draw a lot of data, depending one where and how they're used. With the new plans, de la Vega hopes to see high-consumption applications like Internet video being steered toward hot spots, where they don't clog up AT&T's cellular network.

Consumers have rebelled against the idea of data usage caps on home broadband, at least when the limits are set low enough to make online video consumption expensive. Time Warner Cable Inc. was forced to back away from trials of data caps last year after consumer protests and threats of legislative action.

In the wireless world, where data capacity is more constrained, usage caps are more common. Most wireless carriers, for instance, limit data cards for laptops to 5 gigabytes per month.

But with intense competition for smart phone users, phone companies have been reluctant to impose similar limits on those devices, although Sprint Nextel Corp. reserves the right to slow down or disconnect users who exceed 5 gigabytes per month. It remains to be seen whether AT&T's rivals will join it in imposing caps or use their own "unlimited" plans as a marketing advantage.

This is great news, as I know both my wife and I use less than the $15/month each, so instead of paying $30/ month EACH, we will pay $30/m for both our lines. Thank AT&T ! :)

Verizon has two plans - one with limited data (cheaper), and one with unlimited...

Question- how much is it currently per month to have 2 iphones on one plan with unlimited minutes, texting, and data?

Looked at switching to AT&T, so just curious.

Im currently paying $140/m for 2 iphone lines with unlimited data, but 800 minutes , with free weekend and nights and free to other at&t mobile....

If you want unlimited MINUTES then its a bit pricey , $70 for first line, plus $50 for second line,, $120,,,, then add for both iphones $30/m each so $180/m plus taxt and fees for TWO iphone lines with unlimited minutes...

I pay $42.50 a month for this: FamilyTalk Nation 550 Rollover & Unlimited Night/Weekend & Unlimited Mobile-To-Mobile

Plus the $30 for unlimited data, and then the extra you pay for texting. It's $20 more for unlimited and $15 for 500 or less texts. Does your $140 include your texting?

No, they don't have that plan - I looked into AT&T... there's a 450 plan and a (I believe) 900 plan.

Yeah, we were told that if we ever leave them, we won't get a plan like that again  We've always had AT&T since my first little flip phone. I like their roll over minutes. I never go over my minutes ever, and I use my phone a lot. And I actually end up wasting a lot of the roll over minutes. And that is with 2 teens on my plan too, with the $9.99 family thing. They have no internet though. I think we pay about $144 for all three of us. I dont' think that's too bad for 3 phones. If they ever want internet, they will be paying for it themselves. My husband has a work flip phone and doesn't want anything else.

If you're under 65 and you have a landline, you're wasting money. I'm giving a pass to blue hairs because many of them just can't deal with technology and refuse to let go of certain things, but anyone else is just throwing $45 a month down the crapper.

I'm grandfathered into an old alltel plan
1200 minutes~unlimited texts~free nights (starting at 7:00 pm)
and weekends~ friends and family free, as well as all alltel (now verizon) customers
which basically means our minutes are rarely used. Of course we
added the unlimited data for the smartphone and it's 160.00 per month
for two phones ...that's tax title and license included!!
Gotta double that for four phones, though!!

I still have my landline, cause its tied in with our internet at $60/month for both, with DSL and unlimited long distance. might change that down the road to internet only and add vonage.

I still have mine. I like having another line to use in the event that something happens to the cell towers or they are out like in the event of chaos i.e a hurricane or other such natural disaster. Yep, another good reason. Calling 911 from home gets the local PD or fire. Calling it from a cell gets the county and by the time our local PD or fire gets the call and all the info on location you could bleed to death

I dropped my original land line and went with Vonage for my home and business numbers (I work from home). I added back a bare-bones land line for around $10 per month for the same reasons - natural disasters, etc...

I pay $155 for three lines with T-Mobile
Unlimited minutes for all
Line one has unlimited texting and unlimited internet
Line two has unlimited internet
Line three has nothing but regular calling.

I don't know if I'm paying too much or not. I do know that my 3g is fast and I don't have dropped calls. Of course T-Mobile doesn't have as many subscribers as ATT so network slowdown isn't as much a problem. My signal strength is good in my home (which wasn't the case at all when I first signed up 8 years ago). I can't complain.

My brother did the Vonage thing for his house, since they have cells anyway, just to cut down the phone bills - that's probably something I will do if I choose to have a landline again. It's certainly cheap enough.
