First year done!

Postby parfait » Fri Jun 04, 2010 6:35 pm

Finally! I've woken up around 0500 every morning the last few weeks, going to bed at 0200 just to get enough time to get through the books. Just had my last exam today (histology) and I got a 17 (grade system goes from 1-20 in France, whereas 20 is the best). I still got some time left in school, but that was my last big exam for the semester. I think I'm going to get a average of 15/16 when all the exams are rounded up.

Around 8/10 didn't make it through to the next year, but who the fuck cares; now I'm at least one year closer to my goal of being a surgeon.

Happy weekend everyone :)

I'm sorry I can't write your name correctly and make those two dots over the e.

Wow - congratulations, surviving first year and doing so well is already quite an accomplishment! Best of luck on the road ahead to becoming a surgeon!

Are you taking the summer off or getting a jump on your second year reading?

Thanks.

I'm going to move back home to Cannes for the summer, partying and traveling for a months time, but the rest of my vacation is going to be spent doing volunteer work (obesity clinic) to up my experience quota and reading up on my next year curriculum.

So Histology didn't spark any interest in a Pathology career for you? Somehow it doesn't surprise me. Someone like you would never be happy hidden behind the scenes where no one knows who you are and what you're doing  You TOTALLY have a surgeon's personality!! I think you'll make it!!

Congrats for real!! But PLEASE don't go all "health freaky and americans are all fat and disgusting" on us again just because you'll be back in that obesity clinic. Save it for the job

Congratulations on finishing your exams - mine start in 2 weeks. One of the joys of being 38 and studying stuff that interests me rather than stuff that matters is that somehow exams aren't stressful any more, just work. Good thing too - my first time in Uni, I'd walk out of a 3 hour exam shaking like a leaf because I'd gone cold turkey on caffeine, having managed to average 3 pots/30 cups of coffee a day while studying.

What are you studying? I'm guessing something biology related.

I appreciate the long ass rant, Lynn, but what's a "surgeons personality"? You've been watching too much TV!

I wish I could say that , Im 39 doing my MA in Philsophy , I have a paper to write and submit by end of next Thursday, Ill probably not get around to it until Tuesday, get extremely stressed and have two horor filled days. Its no different for me from the time I was in my early 20's in Uni. Only then, my procrastionations and resulting stresses had their root causes in alcohol and fun.

congratulations on a year under your belt parfait

um, I dont watch many of those shows. They aren't realistic enough to put up with most times. I have a biology degree in medical technology, a BS, and since I worked in the medical field for 12 years, and in the blood banking/transfusion end of things, I think I had my share of interactions with surgeons. They are a special breed and trust me, with your arrogance, you will fit in fine ;)

Woah, didn't know that. So you do something else than dishes and pre-heat stuff in the microwave? Good for you, Lynn. Good for you!

The surgeons I've met are cool people though; goal oriented and problem solving. They get the job done, without much of the patient-doctor yapping. I don't see what's arrogant about that.

Leave out the bad mouthing in this thread, calling me stuff like arrogant. When one of you ladies starts with a sarcastic remarks, the rest of you just jump on the Smartass mobile and join in on the fun, don't you? Words hurts, you know. This is a thread of peace, joy and accomplishments. And it's about me. Not you.

you know, if you read my words better in my first post, it was really COMPLIMENT :P You NEED a certain personality to make it in that world. That is fact. And you seem to have that all down so far. Arrogant in meaning you have an overload of self confidence, and you aren't afraid to tell people what you think of yourself, and you aren't afraid to dish out to others. You think you are the best. You think you are "parfait"  All of those things are things you do need. I NEVER said that surgeons cant' be nice, wonderful, intelligent, awesome people.

But they DO have an arrogance about them, some to a degree where they are not nice people. Heart surgeons and other such specialists especially. You aren't the "pee-on" (sorry to bring pee into this, but I want to use a language you understand :P ) on the other end of the phone hearing how you are killing their patient because you cant' work up an antibody problem and give them a unit of blood fast enough for their patient when they need the blood in emergency surgery. Literally yelling at you, because if that patient dies it's on your head. Well you know what, then freaking sign off on the blood and take responsibility. It may be incompatible, but we'd be happy to let you have it! But no, they don't want THAT liability. And you cant' make tests like that go any faster. It can take a whole day to identify an antibody.

Or when the plasma isn't thawed fast enough because THEY didnt' order it in a timely manner, they say "their patient is bleeding to death, what is taking so long" .... you can't make plasma thaw any faster! Trust me, when you are in a lab, they treat you like you are an uneducated idiot monkey that got trained on the job. they have no clue nor do they care  Shit rolls down hill, and guess who's at the bottom. I know a heart surgeon told one of our techs one night that if she had him paged for a question about his written orders one more time, he would come down there and "blow her brains out" Think he got fired??? Of course not! He was one of the top performing heart surgeons they had, in a hospital that preforms in the top 10 hospitals in numbers of heart surgeries per year. They needed him. ! He got a hand slapping and had to write her an apology  I have many stories like this. I am just trying to give an example of where I get my feelings about surgeons. Just WAIT until YOU are the Pee-on who is in your rotations and see if you see what I mean

And YOU made this about ME when you brought me into it by saying that I must watch too many medical shows

Hey, Blueskies, I used MS WORD. Typed in Gael, highlighted the "e" then went to the "insert" tab above, then "symbol". Found the ë symbol and cut and pasted it. Good luck!

well, what else should he expect from me? compared to other things I've said, he should have taken it as a huge compliment from me and run!!
