Tommy is a pretty down-to-earth guy too. I've sat and had beers with him a few times at a local watering hole when he's stopped in.

I think some friends and I called it once from a pay phone when the tune was new but vaguely remember only getting something like a "this number is not in service" recording or something like that.

That was the real Jenny's phone number, but as soon as the song became a hit, her parents were inundated with calls and had to get a new number, so it didn't last long! Most people would have gotten the 'number not in service' message. If the writer had used a different number, someone else would have gotten the wave of calls, so not changing it saved some other person from getting a bunch of calls and wondering why the hell all of these people were calling his or her number looking for Jenny!

Well the song didn't include an area code. And I'm sure Jenny wasn't living in my area code and each area code probably had an 867-5309. I bet that number was out of service in nearly every area code across the United States back when that song was popular. Maybe we should call it now and see what happens.

I don't remember where I saw that story, but I just looked it up and one of the songwriters said it was made up and another said it wasn't, so now I'm not sure what the real story is, but since so many people were calling it, if it was her real number enough people in her city would have been calling! When a friend of mine first moved to Vancouver, she got the old phone number of a Future Shop and had to have it changed after the first week. I did a reverse phone lookup, and there are two people in different areas of Ontario with that number and a Plumbing and Heating company out of Alberta. I wonder if they get crank calls now - 'Yo, is Jenny there?'

If I wrote the song I would have named it 696-9869. Wow, that's all a very lucky set of numbers....the Asian in me.
