I'd like to see the girl ask the guy to marry her. Can I get a witness?!

Actually, I did propose to my ex; of course, we never actually got around to getting married before we broke up, but I'm not sure if that means anything.

Come to think of it, I know three different couples who are all happily married with kids, and the woman did the proposing; only one of them on February 29th too.

I always liked assertive, agressive, insertive, assumptive, affirming type women who are not afraid to let it be known what they want. :D

Back in the day I had the job of driving a car at the races, hauling the trophy girl around. She was a knockout and we were attracted to each other, so later we ended up in a bar, then in bed. She basically just climbed up over my face and instantly let it be known that I was gonna lick her box, whether I liked it or not. I was very much ok with this and the night turned out just fine.....some of the hottest sex I ever had. (I'm glad she really was a woman, btw)

Wow, I'm kind of surprised to see a woman say that.

Personally, I really liked being married, having such a close relationship and friendship with someone in that way, etc.
If it was all about kids, I obviously could have 'secured' that deal right away, but I wouldn't do that. That's just wrong. :?

But I'd never ask a guy to marry me. One too many smacks to feel secure enough to do that, probably one too many fakers who pull what they can out of you until they find a new target. But you know, maybe you actually do have somewhat of a point, MG.... it probably goes both ways. And it's just sad and wrong. :?

Oh no, I just meant that there is a huge difference between wanting what you want and needing what you want. Of course, many people want to be married for the reasons you've stated, but women used to marry primarily out of need and expectation …men married for sex, a maid and someone to bear their children :P
I was just pointing out that most women, today, need men for procreation only …the rest is pure choice.

LOL!! I know, you might be the last of the mohicans, and soon, another one bites the dust. :(

It's true though, case in point, I had this friend who was with this guy for a few years, obviously in love - and he was into it just to get his damn visa fixed becasue he was here illegally. He kept pushing her, saying "if you loved me, you'd help me"... total creep, total player, using her... he didn't even fake it that well, either, he treated her like hell. And she still wanted to marry him but "not that way" she always said.

I'm really, really surprised she doesn't have several guys after her already. Think about it - she's very intelligent, quick witted, has a sense of humor, can stand up to just about anyone, has great ideas, very creative, great opinions, common sense, the list goes on. And on top of that - she's cute, too. A total package. Single guys in Chicago are numb from the neck up...they're missing the boat by not approaching this catch.

My original question came from a need to understand why women still want the old fashioned guy asks girl schtick...Personally, I think its attractive if a woman knows what she wants and is secure enough to ask the guy...but that's just me. I realize women are still raised to want the 'fairy tale'....

I just didn't really think it was like this any more ...not like the movies, where the
girl has been waiting, anticipating and acts shocked when the proposal comes!!
Don't people usually have discussions nowadays, prior to?!? They know they are going to
or not going to do this thing ...it's just a matter of when, where etc. I guess I just assumed
it was a mutual agreement ...it was for me ...as long as the ring was good!! :P

I don't know about all that (but thank you  ) - but you know what's really funny (except it's not)... I actually had a guy tell me all of that once, verbatim, followed by "their loss, hopefully my gain!!" ... and it was all a lie, because he was the one guy in my past who hurt me the most. So I can't answer the original question speaking for all women, but for me... no I wouldn't ask a guy because some burns, while they heal, you still don't want to put yourself in that position again, being humiliated, being a good person and getting smacked for it.

I guess I "kind of" asked my ex-h, but that was more mutual, so I'm not sure it counts. We loved each other, lived together, we had talked about it... it was a conversation where I kind of put it out there as more a matter of when, so I might have techinally 'asked', I'm not sure... I knew when he was getting the ring, so even though he officially asked the question, I probably put it in motion a little bit.

LOL same here, we went out for 6 years before we got married and it was just kind of understood that is where we were heading, so when he asked I said yes. We kind of did things backwards though, I got an engagement ring on our 10th Anniversary instead. He couldn't really afford it at the time, and I'm soooo not materialistic......it didn't bother me at all, we decided to go with matching wedding bands though. On my birthday closest to our 10th Anniversary we were at my parents having coffee/cake and when I opened his gift it was a kitchen sifter/collander??? LOL I was thinking WTH? Then he lifts up this huge box of sand and plops it down on the kitchen table. Needless to say, after 10 years and much sifting later there was a gorgeous engagement ring.

If I had waited for my husband to get around to it, we'd still be living together. I didn't ask, I just told him that after 2 years, I expected marriage and if he wasn't interested that's fine, just let me know and I'd move on. We had a wedding date set 30 min later. Been married for 32 years. Women don't need men to procreate. You can go to a sperm band for that. My husband & I never had the desire to have kids, but I'm still glad I got married. He's my best friend, lover & companion. We've had some pretty tough times in our marrige, but we're happier than ever and I'm glad I stuck with it. Anything worth having is worth working for.
