I saw MOOSE!!!

On a lighter note, I saw 7 or 8 moose this past week on my fishing trip! :D I've seen them before as a child, but they are amazing creatures (and freaking HUGE!!!). I caught the biggest trout of my life (17 inch brook trout), and caught several other beautiful fish. We had an awesome (and adventurous) trip.

Some highlights... My dad burning up the boat motor, leaving me to paddle us about two fucking miles back to the camp!  How did he top it the next day? He took the canoe out by himself and flipped it right there at the beach. In it were my wallet and a very nice camera that I had bought my wife for Christmas last year. Good news... the wallet was fine. The camera... ehhhh, it won't turn on, and it's been drying out for 3 days now.

Overall though, a great trip! I made a lot of new friends, and we ate awesome food out there, drank LOTS of alcohol, and I learned how to play cribbage. Very cool trip, but I am SOOOO glad to be back. :D

If you saw more than one moose ...shouldn't you say meese?!?! :P

Sounds like a very memorable trip, Jimbo ...next time airtight plastic bags for items in the canoe and then
when it flips, things will float and stay dry ...so sorry about the camera!!

You getting sassy with me?  I had the camera in a camera bag, and it was in a big plastic container. The problem was that Dad didn't bother to close the lid on the container after getting some stuff out of it, and I wasn't around when he did it. :? The guys called him "flip" for the rest of the week, and I'm sure they'll be laughing about it for years.

Moose is a collective singular so the plural is also moose.

Sheep is the plural of sheep.

Then please explain the plural of marlin? Why are the Florida Marlins plural? I don't think it's correct.

Because names based on nouns with irregular plurals do not acquire them. Nouns that derive from names also qualify under this rule; Boston Red Sox, Toronto Maple Leafs, etc.

This is kinda funny in light of the idiocy in this thread ...

If the plural of "goose" is "geese", then why don't we say the plural of "moose" as "meese"? Also, with hippopotamus, why isn't that hippopotami? Cactus is cacti.
Related:
meese
lol
Let me pull an answer out of the ... *ANSWERBAG*
Goose comes from German, and in German it often happens that an OO in the root becomes an EE in the plural--goose,
geese; foot, feet. (The reason is that the plural ending in German is also an E sound, and it's easier to say EE-E than OO-E.)

The moose, however, is an American animal so it doesn't follow the German pattern. And the mongoose is an Asian animal so it doesn't either--plural of mongoose is "mongooses."

In an environment where everyone knows Latin or Greek, people DO say hippopotami, but since most people don't these days, it makes you sound like a stuffed shirt.

Most of the irregularities in English come from the fact that virtually all of our words were borrowed from other languages with different rules for things like how to form plurals.

LOL, they sound like Newfies (Newfoundlanders). Us westerners don't have accents, but the further east you go, they have major accents and talk like that....I work with one, she is an absolute hoot!

I guess it's the same in the US too, the more east you go. I don't find my Cali friends have any kind of accent really. I met a few east coasters from MR when I was at the show in my sig......and had a hoot chatting with them, listening to their accents. Like when one gal had to go "pawk the caw."

That's my Michigander Canadian accent ...my friends from school had fun w/it and
my accent is a huge joke for the Louisianaians ..."let's go to your hoose, just because it's different than any other house
