DES MOINES, Iowa -- A man was arrested Tuesday morning for harassment and threatening to set the Blazing Saddles bar on fire, according to police reports.
The bartender said a man entered the East Village located bar earlier in the night with friends but did not order a drink. The man left and later returned around 2 a.m. as Blazing Saddles was closing, witnesses told police. He was informed it was closed after he knocked and asked to come in to have a drink.
The man got angry and began calling the bartender and others inside the bar "faggots." Witnesses said the man told them "I'll burn down the bar either today or tomorrow."
They quickly shut and locked the door to keep him outside.
After the door was shut, the bartender said he started smelling something burning and saw the man leaning near the front door. He immediately called police.
Upon arriving, police said they saw the man standing outside the front door, but when he was approached, he said he was never in the bar and he had done nothing wrong.
The police report said after he was handcuffed, a book of matches containing the Blazing Saddles logo was found in his pocket. When police searched outside the front door they found a partially burned match laying on a metal piece placed underneath the front door.
The front door is wooden and police said that would have made a burning smell. The police report said if there had been any foot traffic through the front door the match would have easily been moved.
The man was arrested on charges of harassment in the first degree and threats to place a fire.
It is unknown if the man was intoxicated at the time.
