Happy (?) Birthday Canada

Yeah - we got all kinds of 'presents' here on this our 143rd birthday, especially in this fine province. Effective today, the cost of almost everything has gone up due to the implementation of harmoninzed sales tax, which blends the federal Goods & Services Tax with Provincial Sales Tax. So most things that were previously taxed 5% GST and no PST are now taxed 12%. The only thing that has decreased in price because of some wacky reasoning is liquor - guess I'll have start drinking more :) . Oh - and gas prices have also increased today 1-2 cents/litre because of a new carbon tax in BC - which means other things will increase even more because of transportation costs.

Why did I ever move to this province? Biggest mistake we ever made.

Oh yeah - Happy F****** Birthday Canada!

You moved to BC becaue it's the most beautiful place on Earth. My guess is you will be paying for the Olympics for a good while. THAT was your present Canada...Hockey gold. Don't ever forget that day.

Time to move back to Calgary, chicklet! Time to pack up the hubster and doogies and head back to Alberta, only 5% GST here still. :D

Actually there was a lottery all 3 of those seasons...Pittsburgh got lucky...and why are you say YOU?? I am not part of the ownership or coaching staff...I didn't have ANYTHING to do with it.

The season they REALLY tanked was 1983-84 so they could draft Lemieux...

You know Dean, it really is - but I'm so tired of hearing about 'sunshine' tax and all that crap. It's a beautiful place if you have the means to enjoy it. There's no work here in a smaller centre for my husband, everything costs more, we've been behind the 8-ball since we moved here. I guess we just have to lower our standards and sit on the deck drinking cheap(er) beer all day, instead of going out to restaurants, boating, shopping and stuff

I know what you mean - everyone where I lived said it was so much cheaper to shop here, but now I believe that is because it is 70 minutes closer to the nearest Real Canadian Superstore in the town where everyone actually shops! The milder weather really is a big plus though - my aunt and uncle went through a snow storm in AB a few months back and drove here the next day where it was warm, sunny, and the flowers were in bloom. It would take quite an amazing opportunity to get me to move east of the Rockies. We just need to get rid of the idiots in BC's government who keep shoving new taxes down our throats and tell us we just don't understand why they are good for us. :?

I feel a little guilty reading this today after getting over the shock of paying more for everything yesterday. I'm still pissed at our government for going ahead with this despite the fact that over 700,000 voters signed a petition against it - that and the fact they are now planning on spending over a million dollars on a media campaign to convince everyone it is the right thing to do  . But I wasn't serious about the restaurants and boating and stuff  - that's not what we're about. Our visitor from Ghana really put things into perspective - that beautiful lady was overwhelmed with the beauty and cleanliness here, and how 'rich' everyone is. And you know what? - she's right - we are rich in so many ways.

We are really blessed here - I don't get to travel very much, but I know what things are like in so many other countries and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else! I just moved from a town that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world and they couldn't get over how beautiful it is here. I think BC has the most to offer out of all of Canada's provinces - I love the city of Ottawa, but the weather is horrendous and it's too far away from my family. Alberta has great people and lower taxes, but it's windy, flat, and it snows when you least expect it! If anything, I would head further west to the Island and if I get there just in time for the big earthquake, well at least that wouldn't surprise me.
