Kansas, Styx and Foreigner

Saw these 3 bands last night in Omaha, Nebraska. The concert was free and they played in front a of a very enthusiastic 80,000 people.

Kansas ... I hate this band and have always thought little of them. That said, I couldn't help but be pretty impressed by their musicianship. They had some really cool shit going on up there. Vocally ... not the best, but an admirable performance and very respectable. 80/100

Styx ... being a native of the south side of Chicago, like Styx, I've grown up listening to them. They played pretty well, but the absence of Dennis DeYoung is a glaring omission. Gowan just isn't that good, but he did enough of a job to keep the crowd interested and he seems like a really nice guy who tries his best to keep the crowd into the show ... and usually does. I tried not hold him being a Canadian doucher againsnt him. Didn't work. Get DeYoung back. 83/100

Foreigner ... never have been much of a Kelly Hansen fan, but this dude ruled the roost last night. He was spec-fucking-tacular and the crowd ate up the classics. Personally, I LOVED hearing IN Pieces live. These guys played their hearts out and had 80,000 people behind them. Can't Slow Down sucked live ... don't ever play it again. Kelly was channeling Lou Gramm very well and added his own little splash of originality, and it was wonderful. 95/100

All in all, what a great night of music by 3 solid bands with a history that dates back parts of (at least) 4 decades. Bravo to all those that performed and the city of Omaha for putting together a top notch night of free music. They got it right ... very right.

PS The people voted these acts in from a vast variety of choices. Congrats. They, too, got it right. 8)

Dude, you should have seen them in their heyday. Walsh nearly killed himself with meth so it's no wonder his voice is nearly shot. That said, their music is tight as shit. Pick up the Device Voice Drum DVD, it's damn good.

I've been about 6 or 7 Kansas shows over the last 10 years and there've been some poor performances vocally by Walsh. That being said, since he's sobered up, his vocals have actually improved. Billy Greer also handles a lot of the vocals as well and he's a great singer in his own right.

That being said, Kansas is one of the few bands that sounds a lot better live than on their albums, for the most part. They've been one of the tighest live acts I've ever seen each time I've had a chance to catch them.

So would you go if it were not free ?!?!
Meaning, would you pay money ...like now after having seen them?!?
All of them as a whole ...not just one or two of the three...

You are in dire need of drug testing. The most idiotic statement I have ever read on MR in my entire time here.

I will say this forever- Styx , Foreigner, Survivor and Journey no longer have the singers that sang the hits. They are the guitarists that thought the band revolved around them. They should have left the band name with some dignity and moved on.

They were here a few weeks ago at Blossom [where you guys saw Journey a few years ago in "Cleveland"]. That's about an hour an 15 minute drive for me, let alone all the hassle of walking to and from the car and getting stuck in the parking lot for 2 hours. I love all three bands, but I wasn't interested in putting up with the Blossom bullshit to hear them each play a quick and dirty greatest hits set more or less.

Styx without DeYoung is missing a huge piece, obviously, but they put on a very energetic and fun show. I haven't seen Kansas yet, but I love their DVD. I haven't seen Kelly-Foreigner either, as Gramm was in his brief comeback the one time I saw them 8 or 9 years ago (I think?).

I always wished they'd get John Elefante back.....Even if Walsh was there too.

LOL

Survivor you say? Well now are you talking about Dave Bieckler who sang their massive hit Eye Of The Tiger and now sings Bud Light commercials on the radio?

Or are you talking about Jimi Jamison who came in when the band became "light rock" sensations with Vital Signs.

2 singers, 2 hit albums .... What a legacy !

I would pay to see them again, but it would have to include the 80,000 fans! Man, that really made for an incredible atmosphere! 8)

Walsh's voice may be toast, but musically, Kansas crushes Dyx, and Foreigner....Steinhardt should be in the group sharing vocals anyway...

Glad you had a good time at the show! Yes I agree Styx needs to get Dennis back. I just saw Dennis and his new band yesterday, he can still sing. I actually think Dennis has Styx beat with this new band. August Zadra sounds just like Tommy Shaw it is crazy. Dennis actually plays a true Styx set, sounded like 1996 all over again.

I hope you are wrong. Styx in its current state is a good band, but no where close to the 96-97 Styx. What I heard last night at the DDY show was the closest I have seen to the classic Styx sound since 1997. It was a fantastic show.
