Prince: 'The Internet is over'
July 5, 2010, 4:20 PM EST
WENN

Music superstar Prince is adamant he will never sell his songs on the Internet, insisting Web-based outlets will soon disappear because they are no longer "hip."

The "Purple Rain" hitmaker has long battled to keep his music offline -- in 2007 he sued YouTube.com and eBay.com claiming they "are clearly able (to) filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content, which is core to their business success."

Prince has also moved to ban fansites using images and anything linked to his likeness, while a home video of a child dancing to one of his songs on YouTube was pulled down in 2007 after the star's Universal Music Publishing claimed the recording infringed copyright.

The artist is still refusing to allow Web sites to sell his music and he's adamant fans will soon move on from the Internet.

He says, "The Internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.

"The Internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you.

and along these same lines... from Bret Michaels taken from an interview last week...

Q: Has it been difficult to adapt to changes in the music industry after being part of it for so long?

Michaels: Some things are still the same. Now artists use MySpace to get discovered; back in the day we used a slot at the Paradise Bar and Grill. There are great opportunities, but here's the downside -- in the new digital age, people are not as loyal and they forget more quickly. When we started, people really dove into knowing the band. In the digital world, it pops up and an hour later there's another video on YouTube and they forget about the last video they were watching. It's a little more easy come, easy go. I always tell new bands, "Don't fear going out and being personable with your fans." It's a great new world we live in to be exposed, but it's also scary because you can easily be disposed.

Now that's friggin LAME, especially pulling a youtube of a child dancing to his music??? LOL, bans fansites from posting pics, can you imagine Perry doing that.

Have to say though it's not always the artist or bands pulling their stuff. I know Warner Music pulls any music videos of Mr Big from Youtube, yet tons of live recent Mr Big or solo stuff doesn't get pulled, especially Eric and Paul stuff and they don't care. I've noticed others like Universal have actually put up artists channels on youtube (can't beat em join em  ).

I really don't blame him!! I don't know that, because he does this, the internet is over for music,
but I definitely support this!! It's just too bad that so many artists end up losing $$$
as a result of the WWW. As far as the youtubey w/the child ... awww, but one must
remain consistant ...I would love to be able to tell people that my youtubey was pulled
by PRINCE ... I've always understood Van Morrison to be adamant about his music,
as well!!! Perhaps many more will follow suit and maybe not!!

dont know about that, but many many kids are now messaging on their phones and not using email or IM on their computers... so I think there is something to the internet and being hip to use it... or cool to use it... if the internet stops being ~cool~ to use for un foreseen reason... IE internet TAX... ;-) then I could see a time, where the internet might not be so cool to be on 24.7 like some are on it now...

Narcissist much, Purple One?

I pay all my bills online, bank online, even submitted the freakin' federal tax return online ... the journal I edit is managed all online; our doc students submit their dissertations online; I teach 1/2 my classes online ...

The 'Net is integrated into the fabric of life around the world ... only a small part is about toys, gadgets, and coolness ...

I know, I think it's stupid too, you would think Warner and other labels would like the exposure of their artists/bands. I can't tell you how many clips I've seen on youtube, then went out and bought the concert dvd or video compilation of.
