Teenage singer Charice gets Botox for 'Glee' debut

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino teenage singer Charice Pempengco says she prepared for her debut on the hit TV show "Glee" by getting Botox and an anti-aging procedure "to look fresh on camera."

The 18-year-old Charice, whose singing career rocketed after appearing on Ellen DeGeneres' and Oprah Winfrey's talk shows, underwent a 30-minute Thermage skin-tightening procedure and Botox to make her "naturally round face" more narrow, celebrity cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBN television.

Charice, in the same interview, said last week's face makeover was part of her big preparations for her appearance on the hit show's second season. She starts filming at the end of this month.

"All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure," Charice said.

In an earlier TV interview, she said she auditioned for "Glee" in mid-June in Los Angeles and was thankful to have been accepted.

"It's really a blessing," she said, adding she was "very proud to be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino."

On the streets of Manila on Monday, some residents who follow Charice had mixed feelings about what she did with her face.

"I think it's OK for women to have procedures done, but Charice is too young. Does she need it?" said Patricia Carpio, a 21-year-old student.

For Myrna Lumanao, a 23-year-old seller in a doughnut stall, looking natural is better. "I guess she can afford to have those procedures done because she has the money, but I wish she did not change her looks."

Born Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco and raised with her brother by a single mother, she sang in local contests and appeared on TV talent shows in the Philippines and South Korea before she got a big break on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" at age 15.

She later appeared several times on the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and credits Winfrey for helping push her career.

This is just sick to me!!! When I look at all these hollywood pics of these young women and I mean young even up to the age of 60, who have all these injections and lifts and pouty lips, they just look plastic and fake to me. Why do women want to look this way?? That was brought up in the Diane Lane thread and I guess that is why I responded to her beauty there. Im not sure if she's had little things done or not, but she looks NATURAL anyway, and that is the key. Doing things to change yourself into something that looks so fake is a sick thing to me. And the pouty lip thing is UGLY! I mean really, how many guys really want to kiss THAT??? I'd be like kissing a fish!!

Okay, that is just fucking stupid. Where is David Foster? He needs to wup that girl's ass. What makes it worse is that this girl's story was much like Arnel's as she has come from poverty but talking up this type of procedure as a needed expense comes across as vanity to me for one so young. The only other explanation I can think of is that she has a serious inferiority complex. Look at the other cast members on the show, they're not exactly pinups themselves but I doubt they go about thinking they need to professionally mutilate themselves. She is not going to win many new fans with this type of attitude. It's like she thinks she seriously needs to compete with the stars on the show. It's TV! It's not real, you play a role and go home. Her co-stars are either going to be snickering behind her back big time or feeling very sorry for her as her self esteem seems to be in crisis mode already.

I am sure that kills the nerve endings to her mouth, so it is not like they can feel much in a kiss. Like kissing someone after they have been to the dentist.  We can line them up, wet their lips and stick them to windows though.... like large Garfield dolls! LOL! I can actually picture that......

+1

That is just soooo sad. The competition and self esteem issues run rampant in Hollywood. She actually brought me to tears when I first saw her on Oprah, such a beautiful spirit about her and so down to earth and absolutely stunning voice! Yeah, didn't she ask David Foster to be her Godfather recently..........gawd I hope he steps in before she gets swept up into that world.

Lea Michele will be like "WTF?"

Really? Apparently, that pride is only skin deep if she's worried that the natural Asian characteristics of her 18 year old face make her look so unattractive that she has to alter it.

When I look at older women that have had the typical "lips, cheeks, chin" thing done I'm always reminded fo the puppet "Madame" because that's what most of them look like. So stupid.

Indeed. Doubtless the implants are next.

"You would think that the makeup people could take care of (any wrinkles she might have)

I don't remember having wrinkles at 18 ...is it possible?!?! :?

I must not have a complete understanding of botox ...
I thought it paralyzed your nerves/face?!? I want a shot ...between the eyes!!

For better or worse, she's old enough to make her own decisions. I'm ok with this. Hell, it's her face. Just stay morally grounded and keep singing. :)

After debuting at #8, her album dropped pretty quick didn't it? Seven weeks and gone from the charts.

Why? He went out and defaced himself with some tatoos lately. Not really in good taste for Journey front man.

I think she's calling Lea Michele out. We need us a good old fashion hoe down, is what we needs. Let's see how those pretty faces look after a hair pulling, fingernail scratching cat fight.

Give me a break Sir Prissy. How gay is the band when the frontman can't even get some tattoos?!

And I don't see the problem with Charice, whoever she is, that wants to get some botox. It's her body - she'll decide for herself. Kinda young, but still; she'll decide. Botox is completely harmless when given under proper care (meaning doctors, not one of them "licensed therapists")

How can it be completely harmless? It's a poison/toxin, botulism? Who's to say what they may say about it 20 years from now.

Look at why she is doing it. She auditioned for a show, they accepted her and now she is going to show up for filming later this month with a difference look than what she auditioned with.

And her rationality is "All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure," Charice said.

She feels pressured to change her look. I understand that she was living in poverty in the Philippines a few years ago and that her life has been a whirlwind since she got on Ellen and Oprah but someone needs to sit down with her and explain there is no pressure from being on Glee that could be great enough to make a person alter their appearance. IT'S A FREAKIN' T.V. SHOW, and from all accounts her role is not even a permanent one.

I get it that it's her choice. I'm just looking at it from the point of her statement about feeling pressured.

Again: when given under proper medical care with the right dosages, makes botox practically harmless. Some symptoms may occur, but I haven't heard of a study that points to botox being dangerous. Keep in mind that botox is used for far more important things than straightening out wrinkles. Certain types of dystonia (musculatory twitching/spasm), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and it's been linked to the prevention of chronic headaches and muscular skeletal pain. :)

Botox isn't some magic anti wrinkle potion though. You'll need laser treatments, chemical peels and fillers too.

How do you get rid of what she perceives to be a moon face with Botox? No matter how tight you pull the skin, your face is still going to be round, isn't it?

Nah, botox wouldn't cut it. Only way I guess you could change a person's facial shape, is through some sort of facial skeletal contouring. Adjusting the angle of the mandible, chin augmentation, temple augmentation, liposuction etc. But that's a big ass operation.

Plastic surgery isn't really my thing, but it really is a beautiful thing.

Well, that is what she is trying to do, narrow her face. We'll see how it looks later.

Here is her normal look, nothing much wrong with it that I can see but then again, I'm not her.

She doesn't get rid of the moon face and she needs to learn to accept it and in time it may make her character very recognizable, like Barbra Steisand's big nose. That nose didn't hold Babs back and neither will Charice's face hold her back. :D

The only thing I see is that she has a large skull, compared to the dimensions of the rest of her body. Ain't no Botox going to fix that though, just have to deal with it.

She's also still growing up. She will change in the next two years anyway, maybe slightly, but she will change.

Agreed. And rounder faces seem to show less wrinkles later.
