Speaking of TMI, how do you guys handle it when you're talking to someone you don't really know, and they start telling you serious, personal stuff?
I was at the pool today with my girls, and I started talking to the mother of one of my older daughter's classmates. She told me that her daughter hadn't been doing a whole lot, and that she was affected by her father's death that occurred in March. I wasn't aware of that happening, and immediately gave my condolences, then she started telling me the whole sordid story, that ended with this guy committing suicide. Then... to add insult to injury, she told me that her daughter was molested when she was 6 years old. OMG! How the hell do you respond to that stuff? Fortunately the child is in counseling, and my daughter and I are going to make a special point of subtly reaching out to her.
Then... I met up with a former co-worker of mine who is also the mother of my other daughter's friend. She then started telling me about how her marriage has broken up over the past few months, and about the prescription drugs that she's had to come off of in trying to get him to come back to her. She went from 24 different meds down to now 6, including the antidepressant that she just started. (This lady has a complicated medical history with lots of heart problems). Here we are standing in the pool and she's got tears streaming down her face. Again I'm thinking "WTF do I say to this?"
How do you guys handle awkward moments like these?
