Best new version of "That Was Yesterday" that I've

Since this is my favorite song, I HAD to post this version with Kelly! It's the best I think I've heard him sound. Yes, they did drop the song from it's original key, and although this version is SLOW AS HELL... it's still amazing! Best replacement they could have ever found for Lou.

That's not bad but the live version from "Live at Deer Creek" with Lou is much better. That one has the same intro as this one does as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MZiSntiI08

Another thing...The version with Hansen is about as live as the vocals on Journey's 2005 tour were.

True about it not being live, but it's still awesome! I LOVE the "Live At Deer Creek" version, but again... I'm talking about the best KELLY version. Get with the program dammit!!!

JSS is more than capable of performing Foreigner's catalog.

Hansen is always 100% live and nothing else. Ever.

EDIT: Unless it is a promo video like this one :)

But on stage...it's always 100% real.

Hmmm, major fan, but not sure if I agree with that one or not, but the 2 bands I could see JSS fronting without even blinking is Queen and Aerosmith. I've played this clip for people and had at least a couple have a hard time believing that this wasn't Stephen. Nails the vocals........ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvZlzG065wA

Thanks Jimbo, that was a great version! I really like Foreigner's choice in Kelly. He's not Lou, but he doesn't try to be either.

I'm a Soto fan (On the Talisman albums), but you're higher than Lindsay Lohan if you think he would sound ANYTHING like Lou and sound this good!

I know...I wasn't trying to imply that the guy lips the songs live.

Hansen appears to be the best of the replacement singers I have heard. A perfect fit for Foreigner. I'm big fan of Lou's and reaching mid-life crisis stage, it saddens me to see all my old groups fall apart, but Hansen seems legit. I look forward to hearing them in September.

Having not heard this new singer very much I think he kinda sounds like Lou.

Is it live?

I think every group with a tenor singer should take every song they have down at least a half a step when performing live. If Mr. Perry had done that years ago, he might not have encountered the problems he did.

Just an opinion from a tenor. LOL

Not a promo video, this video is from Foreigner's live DVD from the 3-disc set released last fall at Walmart. The audio is live, but the whole concert is a composite of their European tour. If you watch closely you can see Hansen has different clothing on at different points in the DVD, even during many songs. Great disc.

Saw Foreigner at the free concert in Omaha this summer and they were awesome.

I agree with you, but one thing Foreigner did right by getting Kelly Hansen is finding someone who's natural range is debatedly HIGHER than Lou Gramm's voice was before the medical problems. Kinda similar to Bad Company getting Brian Howe to replace Paul Rogers.

Kelly Hansen pre-Foreigner
Unruly Child - Heart Runs Free http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVpGiCMLW0E
Stuart Smith - Do You Ever Think of Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAoUa6D4ShU
Stuart Smith - Don't Keep Me Waiting (rocking!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88mAG18utfY

great singer, and a perfect choice for the band.

No way. Maybe in his Hurricane days. Kelly can hit those glass shattering power notes when he has to - and does it quite well. But he keeps them in reserve and sings comfortably in his chest voice. Lou had a naturally high voice that would stop you cold in your tracks. We're talking a one-in-a-million set of pipes like Perry. There's a reason the new lineup has slowed certain songs down or done acoustic renditions, probably so Kelly has an easier time getting *up there* and hitting those highs. The difference between Lou in his prime and Kelly is most noticeable on Foreigner's last album. For much of "Can't Slow Down", Kelly sounds like Augeri on "Kiss me Softly" or something. It almost veers on boring and monotone. At it's worst, it sounds like a generic rocker voice. Kelly is the best replacement the band (and the fans) could have hoped for, but he's not higher pitched than vintage Lou.

This version does kinda sound like Soto.
I've often thought that Soto was better suited for Foreigner than Journey.
Kelly Hansen is awesome though.

I'm not sure vintage Lou is bested by any of his ilk from the 80s when it comes to performing live, including Perry. The guy was the absolute fucking man and a monster performer.

What kind of water are you drinking there in Cleveland? Both in their prime, Perry would destroy him. I'm not saying Lou wasn't a great singer, but please.

Don't get me wrong, bigger fan of Journey than Foreigner by a country mile. Gramm just kicks my ass everytime I watch him on YT from the mid 80s.

That I agree with, Id rather watch/listen to Foreigner live than studio recordings.

Totally agree. I think Foreigner did a better job in replacing their singer than Journey did. Kelly Hansen is the man.

I personally thought Arrival did a very good job muting Augeri's voice. He sounded MUCH better on Red13 and Generations.

I haven't heard much of the Foreigner album, but from what I have heard, he is much lower pitched than he was previously. Maybe his voice has gone down a bit as he ages (or the Foreigner material was deliberately written lower-pitched), but those 2 cds I posted (the Unruly Child and Stuart Smith album) had him at least equal if not somewhat higher than Lou was generally. Granted, that was 10 years ago, so he may have lost some since then.

Lou Gramm had a very good voice with great depth and feeling, but he was never showy with vocal acrobatics like some of his peers. It was a bit fuller than Kelly Hansen's voice also, so Hansen is going to sound higher-pitched, even when hitting the same note.

Yea, it's a shame that Journey's long awaited return did not feature Augeri at the top his game. On some tracks he shines, but I don't think any of the tracks compare to his work on "Remember Me". On that track he sounds like Perry with balls. He does sound in fighting form on Red 13 and Generations.
