Woman calls dad before dying in crash

Woman died after crash, explosions

By Leon Hendrix
LOWELL, Mich. (WOOD) - After driving off the road, crashing her PT Cruiser, and becoming trapped inside the burning vehicle, Tara Beran didn't call 911.

Instead the 20-year-old former Lowell High School cheerleader called her dad to ask him for help.

When he and emergency crews arrived on scene it was already too late. The vehicle was already engulfed in flames. Beran's body was pulled from the vehicle after the flames were extinguished.

Friends and family confirmed that Beran was the victim in the crash, although investigators held off on releasing her name until medical examiners make positive identification.

Investigators are still looking into exactly why Beran drove straight through a stop sign at a 'T' intersection at Bennett Street and Cumberland Avenue in Lowell Township, but they think the bright morning sunshine may have been a factor.

Several of Beran's friends came to the crash scene, some hoping to get an idea of what went wrong.

"It's like a nightmare," said Pat Plite, one of Beran's friends. "It hasn't really hit me yet."

Beran was a student at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago where she was studying fashion marketing and management. She was home in Lowell for the summer and was planning to go back to school in the coming days.

An only child to her parents, Tara was an advocate for finding a cure to breast cancer. Her mother died from the disease several years ago.

Friends describe Beran as an energetic, fun-loving person who always liked to make others laugh.

"She was just always one that had a smile on her face no matter what," Plite said.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department is still working to learn what may have caused the crash and why Beran could not get out of the car.

What a sad story. She was an only child, and her dad already lost her mom. Poor guy had to hear her dying words, and now probably feels guilty for not being able to rescue her.

Life can be cruel at times.

:(

Yes, well there is also a law against speeding, inattentive driving, & driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. That doesn't seem to stop people from doing it.

Unfortunately there are a lot of selfish, self-centered people who only care about themselves and never stop to think about the consequences of their actions until it's too late.

Exactly the reason I keep my car as far away from other cars on the road as possible. If someone wants to pass me, I let them. If someone would rather ride my ass to feed an adrenaline addiction, I drop my speed down until they pass. If I see someone yakking on a hand-held cell phone, I get as far away from them as possible.

Exactly. Everytime I'm in the car with my girl I always feel the need to be drivers ed teacher and drive from the passenger seat and scold her on her mistakes of not being as careful as she should be. Even though most of things aren't her fault, I remind her everyday she should do this and that because 90% of the time and leading cause of accidents is because OF THE OTHER GUY. I constantly look at every little thing while I drive and read them like a book since there is no telling what their going to do. I am a cautious driver haha.

Yes, but I also bring tidings of good cheer at times. It's a mixed bag, just as life is.

Tomorrow I will post a poll on whether you would rather be a teabagger or a polesmoker. That will balance things out.

LOL, not exactly, but in traffic I guess that applies. Did something change for the better with Cold Heart or are you pulling my leg? If it's done, maybe you can just split the name. Have you checked to see if anyone's using Heart yet?

 Yes, I'm pulling your leg. Nothing new sadly, and there probably won't be anytime soon. :( The name is being used (after we were already using it) by some country band in Nashville. They aren't signed or anything, and they don't have a record deal. Either way, I'm letting the name go and I'm starting over (I guess). I've placed a couple of ads, but haven't had anyone really serious contact me yet. If it's meant to be... it'll happen. If not, I'll just give up on it. I'm pretty close to selling my stuff right now and converting my music room into another spare bedroom. I've wasted a lot of time and money on this shit. :?

Law or not, people will still do it and then play stupid AFTER something tragic happens... If they survive.

On the same note, there are many things that'll take your eyes off the road whether it be for a split second or 10 seconds at a time. Checking your rear view (legal), changing the radio station (still legal), eating/drinking (legal), fondling your girlfriend in the passenger seat (legal if she's older than 18) Etc...

The texting thing should be common sense, but since there are so many people out there that have little to none, they need to make laws to make themselves feel better and to be able to point the finger when something happens. Sad but true.
